We all know that the months of September, October, and November are the heart of the green season in Costa Rica.

While many visitors and vacation home owners shy away from spending time in the country during this period, there are a select few of us who are still able to enjoy the best natural beauty and active adventure that Costa Rica and the Sierpe River Valley have to offer.

To us, Green means Go!

What is the main reason that so many people disregard the green season?

I believe that it is because most North Americans and Europeans associate rain with being cold and uncomfortable. In Costa Rica, rain merely means that you could get wet… not cold and uncomfortable, just wet.

The rain in the tropical lowlands is always warm. Rarely is it accompanied by high winds or cold temps. It also rarely lasts more than an hour, as do the clouds that it comes from.

The combination of the rain and clouds creates a cooling effect that for green season veterans is an invitation to spend more time in the outdoors with a zeal and endurance that may not be possible in the high, or “dry” season temps.

This more pleasant environment will allow you to hike, kayak, bike, fish, or spend that extra hour or two on the beach comfortably. Additionally, overcast skies are easier on your eyes and easier on your skin.

These select months are also the season of regeneration in Costa Rica, making it the ideal time to visit for naturalists. With the “rain” forest at it’s greenest and most vibrant, and birds and animals more active throughout the day, nature walks can be that much more intriguing and exciting.

The oceans experience subtle but purposeful changes as well. Humpback whales migrate thousands of miles to calve and rear their young in the tranquil waters near Caño Island. Sighting a dozen or more of these leviathans in a single day is not uncommon.

The ocean water temperatures also cool a bit this time of year ushering in a whole new variety of migratory game fish, and, in my opinion, not only the best fishing of the year, but fishing in which you will most likely have the entire ocean to yourself!

This brings me to the final and most important allure of the so-called “green” season – no crowds…ever!

Don’t get me wrong, the Sierpe River Valley is a quiet place relatively speaking even in the peak of the high season, but the ability to be the only boat out fishing ocean, the lone person drinking coffee in a riverside cafe, and the only person snorkeling at Caño Island or hiking through Corcovado National Park redefines solitude and tranquility in my book.
