Living in Guanacaste: The joys of offshore fishing
Not a day goes by that I don’t feel LUCKY to be living in Guanacaste, Costa Rica.
I moved away from the United States because I truly felt like I needed a change. I was tired of the hustle and bustle and wanted a more relaxed lifestyle. Take a moment and read the recent post by one of my agents – Joseph Emanuelli – and you will see why we all chose to move to this paradise.
The Guanacaste area of Costa Rica features some of the best fishing in all of Costa Rica. Many times there are big events out of the major marinas that you hear about, as in the marina at Los Sueños in Jaco or the big marina in Quepos, but you do not hear much about the Guanacaste area. The reason being is that WE keep it quiet so we can enjoy it all to ourselves.
There are many very capable and dependable Captains that charter their boats from the towns of Playa del Coco, Playa Ocotal and Playa Hermosa. There are many options to choose from for the type and style of fishing you want to experience – from the down and gritty to the super luxury.
From the small local captain that takes you out in an open hulled center console Panga all the way up the bigger boats with bathrooms, lower decks, fighting chairs and look out points.
Personally I have a lot more fun on the smaller Pangas as they can get into some smaller coves easier for the elusive tarpon and get closer to some of deep ledges just off the cliffs that abut the ocean.
They are just as fun for catching rooster fish, red snapper, mahi mahi (dorado), black and yellow fin tuna, various different types of mackerels and best of all, the “marlins” and “sailfish”.
Most of these operators offer quarter, half and full day tours. Most of them, depending on price will have plenty of beverages and some snacks to eat as well.
Best thing of all you do not have to go 40 miles off shore to find great fishing. What a waste of your time just getting out to the fishing areas.
With the local fishing in the Golfo de Papagayo, you only need to go a couple miles offshore and the action is on. Some of the best spots are close to the Catalina Islands, just south by 10 miles or head north toward the boundaries of the Santa Rosa National Park.
I have had friends come from the New Jersey, South Florida and Central California tell me they have to go at least 100 miles off shore before they can find water so blue and clear, they just can’t believe it.
Even if the day happens to be a quiet with not a lot of fishing action, you will still be impressed by the breaching of whales, the giant manta rays dancing on the surface of the water, pods of spotted and bottle nose dolphins playing and the slow moving leather back turtles swimming by…
Oh! I forget to mention the beautiful views of the local terrain and the majestic volcanoes as a back drop.
