New 2011 Report Claims Costa Ricans Are The Happiest People in Latin America.

Costa Ricans are the happiest people in Latin America and are satisfied with their lives according to a recent regional study completed by www.LatinoBarometro.org

The figures show that 9 out of 10 Costa Ricans surveyed are “very satisfied” with their lives and this measure is interpreted as a state of “happiness”.

Costa Rica has the highest rate in the region, in a slightly lower position is Panama with 87% and then Colombia with 83%.

This investigation supposedly represents the opinions of 600 million people in 18 countries in Latin America, between July 15 and August 16, 2011. The poll has a margin of error of three percentage points.

“Costa Rica is not only the happiest country in Latin America but around the world,” said Marta Lagos – the Executive Director of the study – yesterday in an interview in the La Nacion newspaper.

“The happiness of Costa Ricans has nothing to do with the economic crisis, changes in government, or other problems. This life satisfaction is independent of what happens in the globalized world,” said Marta Lagos.

Despite the good ratings in life satisfaction, citizens have less confidence in various institutions. Latinobarómetro found that Costa Ricans still have very “low” confidence in institutions like the judiciary, political parties and the legislature.

The people of Costa Rica were also the most vocal with regards to their unanimous dislike of any kind of a military regime with 90% of them saying that “under no circumstances would they support a military government.”
