Gyrocopter Tour of Osa. Whales, crocodiles scarlet macaws and more…
It all happened because of a roundtrip with a gyrocopter in the Hotel and Flying center of the Flying Crocodile Guanacaste Costa Rica.
My wife and I would have never booked an eight hour flight trip with an ultra light aircraft but the stability and comfort of these auto gyros are amazing after 20 min tryout we were sold. Among all the tours that are offered there was one destination we always wanted to go: Corcovado Peninsula de Osa.
The adventure started the next day in the early morning,
We packed our luggage (light weight) for 3 days while Guido and Frank our pilots prepared the planes for the flight..
We took off by sunrise and started our journey along the beautiful beaches of Guanacaste: Samara Coyote, St. Teresa Malpais, flying over unspoiled beaches surfing the waves like the pelicans.
Entering the gulf of Nicoya we climb to 1,500m to cross the gulf and get some nice views on the gulf Islas Tortugas and Puntarenas.
After ten minutes at this altitude it starts getting fresh and I am happy to descend again, the next highlight is the crocodiles of Rio Tarcoles flying in low altitude over the river is another unique experience even though it is spectacular what we are doing it feels smooth and safe at all times.
Next I find myself cruising along the endless beaches of the Central Pacific coast we spot some huge groups of fish, mantas and even some dolphins cross our way before landing in Quepos where we have a nice breakfast and a chance to stretch our legs before starting the second part of the trip.
I can’t believe that we already have covered half of the distance of our trip!
Right after takeoff we fly over Manuel Antonio national park and it’s beautiful beaches before setting course to Dominical and Uvita. In front of Uvita there is Bahia de las Ballenas the whale’s bay where the humpback whales come to give birth.
We climb to 500m to get an overview and I can’t believe it… Bahia de las Ballenas really does look like a whale’s tail, is this circumstance or do the whales know about this?
We circle for a while but we are not lucky so we leave this for our way back and continue of trip direction Sierpe.
We are now bordering the huge mangrove area of Corcovado which is one of the biggest of Central America for a while we get the feeling of flying over the Amazon, just pure nature with no signs of civilization and then we reach the island of Osa where the rainforest reaches to the beach you can really smell the forest and the sea.
After we passed Drake bay we descend to 50m and cruise along the coastline as we fly slow we can really look for birds and flowers in the canopy then we fly together with the scarlet red macaws before reaching Carate.
After landing check in to our hotel, Finca Exotica it is truly the closest you can get to nature without losing the comfort you need to sleep on a good bed and in a perfect climate without worrying about mosquitos…
In the huge gardens the owners planted hundreds of edible plants that I just did not know about. And Markus and Gabriella the owners of this place create the most delicious meals out of this. A pure organic lifestyle and a beautiful yoga platform to relax.
We decided to do a six hour walk inside the Corcovado jungle and the rest of the time we spent walking and relaxing on the seemingly endless, lonesome beach. After two days in this jungle paradise and a last breakfast made by Gabriella we prepare for our way back.
After lift off we climb along the coastline to gain some altitude before crossing the endless jungle of Corcovado to the gulf side. Golfo dulce, where the dolphins and manatees live, calm waters with amazing colors we follow the coastline low level before climbing over mangroves of Sierpe again to Bahia de las Ballenas.
This time we got lucky, the whales gave us a private show with a big one and a baby playing right below us, we circled in 1,000ft and at least for me, time stood still.
We landed in the Flying Crocodile in the early afternoon full of impressions that I never had before. The smiles on our faces did not stop and that night I dreamed of flying like a pelican over the endless ocean…
