Cost of Living – Gas prices in Costa Rica for March 2012
According to statistics the US average price per gallon for March 2012 across the USA is now $4.68 per gallon with prices lower on the east coast than the west coast.
We Should Consider Ourselves Lucky:
So when it comes to gas prices, consider yourselves very lucky if you’re in the USA because even though gas prices in Costa Rica are about 14% higher than they are in the US, if you were living in the UK, you would paying a lot more… More than double!
The average price in the UK is GBP2.11 per litre x 3.78541178 = GBP798 per gallon which is US$12.51 per gallon for gasoline or, as it’s called in the UK – “petrol”.
Gas Price Increase in Costa Rica – As of 14th March 2012:
- Regular gas is 706 colones per liter x 3.78541178 = 2,672 colones per gallon (US$5.31)
- Super gas is 724 colones per liter x 3.78541178 = 2,740 colones per gallon (US$5.44) and
- Diesel is 645 colones per liter x 3.78541178 = 2,442 colones per gallon (US$4.85)

Taxes on Gas:
In Costa Rica, taxes make up about 37.74% of the price for regular gasoline. In the UK taxes make up 75% of the price and only about 11% in the US….
