Where In The World is Playa Negra?
Playa Negra, have you heard of it? Most likely not unless you’re a surfer! I really don’t like mentioning that this surf break was featured in the follow up movie up movie to one of the most popular surf movies of all time, Endless Summer but it is true and you have to mention it.
Most surfers know about Playa Negra, we don’t need more surfers in town there are already plenty here that call it their home, not that more are not welcome.
There is lot more to Playa Negra than surfing, this town has come a long way since my first visit in 1992, when we drove right by the beach and missed it all together. The roads we so bad, there were no signs no bridges and the few surfers that were here surely weren’t pointing out directions to the beach.
We did manage to return in 1993 with my uncle who had already been here surfing, he brought us, we surfed and I found my paradise! I called Playa Negra my home for a year in 1994, probably one of the best years of my life!
Fast forward to today, we decided to move down to Playa Negra full time six years ago and start our family. Things have been great and we’ve slowly made it our new home with our two children.
Many years have gone by since I lived here in 1994 and believe it or not the town has grown but not like the rest of Costa Rica, Playa Negra is still a very small town that has so much to offer without the hustling touristy feel of say, Tamarindo.
Our town has over eight really great restaurants, some world class cuisine and a multi cultural mix of Americans, Europeans, South Americans and of course the Tico’s , the locals and those who have chosen to leave San Jose for an easier pace of life.
There are no high rise hotels, no late night discoteques , none of the crazy things you see in other more populated and touristy areas of Costa Rica.
We are seeing more and more families, surfing families and non surfing families visiting here. I think it’s because of the beautiful empty beaches and location from the new Liberia International airport.
You can now drive from the airport in less than an hour and half and you’re on pavement all but the last 6 kilometers. Playa Negra is close enough to Tamarindo (only thirty minute drive, close enough to drive in for dinner and night of fun) if you do feel the need for some night life or a little more action.
We’ve been offering lot’s of tours that are nearby and along with many of the beaches that are no more than a ten minute drive away, you can be entertained easily on a week’s vacation. There is a lot to offer, most folks who come here, tend to return year after year.
If you find yourself in town look us up, we are always happy to point our friends in the right direction. I would not tell the entire story if I didn’t mention two of Playa Negra’s best gems, Villa Deveena and Lola’s at Avallanas.
Come and visit Playa Negra, chances are you will be coming back for many years and possibly calling it your home,
