Tamarindo is one of the most popular surf destinations in Costa Rica, and for good reason. Just half an hour from Liberia International Airport (LIR), it is easy to reach and you have your choice of hotels like El Capitan and the Tamarindo Diria to stay in or more modest accommodations.

The white sand beach is literally yards away from the Tamarindo Diria and the water temperature averages about 80° year round.

The waves at Tamarindo can be sloppy at times so you may have to make a couple of tries before catching just the right wave.

There are right and left breaks and a sandy rocky bottom. The surf has a fun power and waves are relatively short, 150 feet long on a normal day to 400 feet long on a good day.

These wall waves are about 3-5′, fast and fun. You’ll find walls, bowl, multipeaks, and close out waves here.

There are good swells and ideal wind direction; the best surfing is in early morning and afternoon. There is a nice, mellow long board wave near the estuary.

One of the best things about Tamarindo is the variety of waves that are close by. You can travel quickly to other nearby destinations such as Ollie’s Point and Witches Rock.

The Rivermouth is worth checking out but it’s definitely not for beginners; if you want a great right beach break it’s best at mid-high tide.

Go across the Rivermouth to Casitas and Playa Grande for great beaches that are uncrowded with some of the most fun waves in the area.

You’ll need to watch for rip current and rocks there, though. Left of the Rivermouth is Pica Pequeno and a lava finger reef that offers a right that can range from mushy to barreling.

Further south is Capitan Suizo, a great beach with a smaller break good for beginners or those who want a nice, mellow ride.

When you’re not surfing there are plenty of other things to do. The town has a definite “surf town” vibe and you can enjoy nightclubs and restaurants.

After a day of sightseeing and surfing you can enjoy great restaurants, and shop in the many boutiques.

If sport fishing is one of your passions you’ll find giant roosterfish and snook.

There are guided ATV tours, zip lines from the mountainside, and whitewater rafting.

You can go paddle boarding, rent a bicycle to explore the town, go horseback riding, or rent a catamaran.
