Major Infrastructure Improvements in Costa Rica Mean Smoother and Faster Road Trips. Managing water runoff is vitally important.
One of the concerns we all have is about the condition of the roads that connect our homes to the places we want to go. The volume of rainfall we get in Costa Rica produces frequent landslides and road washouts. The maintenance of road infrastructure is a never-ending task.
While in Costa Rica earlier this year I noticed great amounts of road maintenance underway all along Highway 239, the road that connects Altos de Antigua to Puriscal and San Jose. This work is very important to those of us living at Altos de Antigua because there were a couple of places near the development where the road had been severely washed out by heavy rains a couple of years back.
We knew those sections of road would be repaired, but never expected the robustness of the end result. The pictures in this article show you the great results achieved by the work crews earlier this year.
Work has been done on Highway 239 to the west of our development as well. This is the unpaved portion of Highway 239 that most of us take to the Pacific coast.
I counted almost 30 culverts under the roadway that have been improved, as well as 14 kilometers of road surface that has been graded smooth. The time required to get to the beach towns on the Pacific is being reduced.
As you can see from these photos managing water run-off is vital. This is one of the most important considerations we take into account when laying out the road, the acreages, and the building sites on the Altos de Antigua development.
That’s why you see concrete ditches beside the paved road in pictures of the development. Handling water is of prime importance when designing and building the homes.
After homes are completed the finish landscaping is treated with just as much concern to ensure that water run-off is channeled gently down to the creeks.
The next picture shows the result of water running off Highway 239 onto the west end of the development. The highway has been repaired with better concrete ditches to manage water on the roadway.
We will extend the new construction further down the slope, then rebuild the slope and strengthen it with elephant grass and other vegetation.
We knew these damaged sections of Highway 239 would be repaired, but never expected the massiveness of the end result. It will be interesting to see how these new embankments manage the runoff during future rainy seasons.
We are very happy to see the greatly improved road surfaces on Highway 239 approaching Altos de Antigua. A concern that recent visitors have had about building their home in this development; i.e. the condition of Highway 239 in a couple of spots, has been removed.
