Happy in Costa Rica
I remember sometime just after college reading a book called the Progress Paradox , its a very interesting book in which the author Gregg Easterbrook asserts that while almost all aspects of Western life have vastly improved in the past century, most men and women feel less happy than in previous generations.
Almost everyone in today’s United States lives better than his or her parents did, still, studies show that the percentage of the population that is happy has not increased in fifty years, while depression and stress have become ever more prevalent.
The book explores why ever-higher living standards don’t seem to make us any happier.
It’s really quite sad and a true byproduct of the materialistic and consumer driven environment that is found in North America.
Endless mind-numbing electronic devices and a glorification of celebrities, its easy to see why many people are do not feel as happy as maybe they should.
Costa Rica often makes headlines for ranking as one of the “happiest countries”. I have no doubt that its simplicity, connection with the outdoors, and focus on family relationships creates the perfect environment to be happy.
So what are you waiting for?
Not everyone can pick up and move to Costa Rica, but sometimes even taking a break and getting away can help, either way it takes a bit of planning and a bit of effort, but for anyone who is not happy where they are, Costa Rica might be the place to start.
