Tamarindo has been Costa Rica’s well-kept secret for many years now with it’s beautiful sandy beaches, pristine waters, and lush rainforests. But the secret’s out now and people are starting to flock to the area to enjoy its natural beauty.

Being a beachfront location it’s only natural that most of the popular activities involve the beaches and oceans, with sailing around Tamarindo being a favorite for the locals and tourists alike.

The shallow waters around Tamarindo provide for some of the best sailing conditions. As you glide up the coast you will witness some of the best views the country has to offer with lush jungles winding their way along the unspoiled coastline on one side and the azure sky on the other.

As you glide along the undulating blue surface the denizens of the ocean will often come up to check you out. Dolphins, sea turtles, jumping manta rays, and even the occasional flying fish can be spotted all up and down the coast. If you’re lucky you may even be rewarded by a whale as it breaches during its play while you sail north past Play Grande, Bahia De Los Pirates, Play Conchal, and Play Flamingo.

Sail up to one of the deserted coves north of Playa Tamarindo where you can drop anchor and spend the afternoon snorkeling. The calm bays with their clear water are home to hundreds of species of ocean dwelling wildlife and as you scan the reef you’ll likely spy eels, octopus, and puffer fish, to name just a few of the varieties. There’s even more reason to drop anchor as you can investigate naturally formed caves by kayak, explore the depths with scuba diving gear, or just float lazily on a raft.

As Tamarindo is such a beautiful location to explore by sailboat there are numerous charter organizations for you to take your pick from. Using a charter boat is the best of both worlds. You get to enjoy the calm peaceful waters on a luxurious sailboat without any of the work. Enjoy your beverages and fresh fruit prepared by friendly staff as you scan the horizon for spectacular views and glimpses of the amazing ocean life.
