“Welcome to Bogarts!” My wife and I were graciously greeted by an attractive young man and woman at the front door of this newly remodeled bistro.

We took a seat by the bar, settled into some comfortable chairs and began perusing the extensive cocktail and wine list. A Mimosa… an herb infused rum… mojito… not tonight, but some interesting and unique concoctions were very tempting and will definitely be on the list for a future brunch or evening cocktail.

My wife and I ordered a Greek salad, finally one with real feta cheese… and the house burger – you can guess who ordered what – and we settled in to enjoy the setting, music, plasma TVs and attention of the staff.

So this isn’t to be confused as a food critique or review… Ill move quickly, but in summary, we had a wonderful meal at this new restaurant, enjoyed the climate controlled space, simple yet tasteful décor and an expansive menu which gave us options from freshly imported oysters to Philly Cheesesteaks!

We finished our drinks and were kindly escorted out to our car by the host offering us an umbrella to ward of the rains, and drove down the newly paved, painted and landscaped street out past the beautiful new Marina.

Dozens of luxury yachts light up the marina basin with the shimmering lights reflecting off the calm waters. Our next stop is the newest theatre here in the area to attend a visiting jazz group, The Brewery Jazz Ensemble visiting from NYU University.

We pay for our tickets at the window and enter this newly remodeled theatre… a truly beautiful setting which is large enough for about 150 spectators but is incredibly quaint and personal. The lights dim, curtain opens and a dazzling performance unfolds before our eyes. The magical lighting and stage created the perfect backdrop for the masterful sounds of a jazz pianist, guitar player, trumpet player, traditional bass and percussionist.

The ensemble from NYU simply hypnotized the audience with their original compilations, applause inducing solos and American classics. Nearly two hours of world class jazz wrapped up an evening to remember…

The most amazing thing about the evening is where this all unfolded?

In Quepos, Costa Rica!

I have been living here for nearly 15 years and have seen the town slowly begin its transformation from the quaint fishing village to an area struggling with its own growing pains. Last night, we experienced first hand what the potential of this community truly is.

One of the hosts put it most poignantly: “The development of a community is not measured only by the physical development of its buildings, roads, and infrastructure, but also – and equally as important – by the social and cultural development of its population.”

We enjoyed a taste of both last night here in Quepos and we left inspired. My personal thanks to COPAZA for remodeling the theatre where the event was held, the owners of Bogarts who have the vision and confidence in the future of this area to invest their time, energy and hard earned money in creating just one more building block in the future of the area, the marina for its enormous investment and most importantly… my wife for the amazing company.

For those that haven’t been here recently… Come visit! There is much to rediscover in Quepos, Costa Rica!
