A Toyota Prius & The Inquisitive Guard From Nicaragua
For a few years my good Costa Rican friend José drove a Toyota Prius.
The Prius is the gasoline/electric hybrid vehicle that normally gives the driver about 45 miles per gallon so it’s wonderfully economical to run in Costa Rica, a country that imports all it’s gasoline.
Another unique feature of this car is that when running on electric, it is incredibly quiet, some say too quiet because people can’t hear it and assume that there are no cars around and for blind people this can obviously be a deadly problem.
But in a country full of ancient, smoke belching and very noisy Toyota trucks that appear to be older than the hills, the whole concept of a practically silent electric car is very new.
As José pulled silently into his driveway last week, his security guard – who has not been hired at about $500 per month for his advanced education and high IQ – was trying desperately to ask José some intelligent questions about this miraculous shiny and silent new car…
As best as he could, in the simplest of terms José explained to the guard that his was a gasoline/electric hybrid car and that when it was being powered by the electric battery, the car was very quiet and after thinking about this for few moments the guard then looked him the eye and asked him in quite seriously:
“So what happens when there’s a power cut?”
