We had been looking for the land to build on for some time and ended up paying for the land in August 2008.

I was not in a rush to build which is a good thing because I had just sold a home in Santa Ana and was buying an apartment in San Jose which had yet to be completed.

My mother was then diagnosed with cancer so with a few trips to and from Scotland, and then with the move into my new apartment in San Jose, it wasn’t until the end of the year when I could focus more time and energy on building my home in the country.

Thankfully as part of the purchase price for the land, I was able to negotiate with the landowner that he would be responsible for clearing the land so that we could build on it. This was done in September 2008.

It was around this time that we applied for the electricity and started working on getting connected.

We are building this home for our own use, we are not planning on selling this mountain home and the first week of the New Year 2009 was when the construction crew started on the foundations of the home.

Build Your Own Log Styled Home – My costs in USD so far:

As of the 26th January 2009 the total cost so far in building this vacation or retirement home in the country has been US$61,386.47 which includes the cost of the 5,000 square meters of land which was ready to build on.

Please forgive me as I neglected to include the not so little payment to the monopolistic Costa Rica insurance company Instituto Nacional de Seguros (INS) for a poliza de Riesgos del Trabajo (which protects the workers on the job and which must be purchased to get the building permit) in the previous article which I have included here:
