Building A New Log Styled Vacation Home in the Mountains – Part V – US$64,346.47 invested so far.
If you are planning to build your new home to live and retire in Costa Rica, now would be a really good time to start.
But we came to the following decisions about why we should build our own vacation home now:
- I’m only 49 years old (on Tuesday) so I’m not “old” but I’m certainly not getting any younger so what’s the point in waiting?
- Costa Rica mortgages are available but like most people, I’m highly allergic to paying mortgage interest at 13.5% however thankfully I do not need any financing on such an affordable home.
- We are not building this home to immediately sell it to try and make money so we’re not concerned that there are fewer real estate buyers now than there were previously.
- This doesn’t really apply to us but labor skills that were scarce and very expensive this time last year are not at all scarce now and not as expensive.
- If times really do get much tougher – and that would not surprise me at all – then this home would be an ideal, peaceful and quite secure refuge for us.
- Lastly, when we were evaluating what to do last year, I had anticipated that along with oil prices that the prices of construction materials would likely come down, so we decided that we would go ahead and start building.

We have not made too much progress in the last week because of some heavy rain. The weather at the moment in Costa Rica is somewhat unusual for this time of the year and, although December and January tend to be windy, the winds this year are the strongest we’ve had in 25 years.
