Cost of Living in Costa Rica – June 2012 gas prices
According to statistics the US average price per gallon for June 2012 across the USA is now $3.45 per gallon with prices lower on the east coast than the west coast.
U.S. Drivers Are Lucky
So when it comes to gas prices, consider yourselves very lucky if you’re in the USA because even though gas prices in Costa Rica are higher than they are in the US, if you were living in the UK, you would paying a lot more… More than double!
The average price in the UK is GBP1.338 per litre x 3.78541178 = GBP5.06 per US gallon which is US$7.87 per gallon for gasoline or, as it’s called in the UK – “petrol”.
Gasoline Prices in Costa Rica – As of June 2012
- Regular gas is 735 colones per liter x 3.78541178 = 2,782 colones per gallon (US$5.64)
- Super gas is 746 colones per liter x 3.78541178 = 2,824 colones per gallon (US$5.73) and
- Diesel is 667 colones per liter x 3.78541178 = 2,525 colones per gallon (US$5.12)
Prices for gasoline in Costa Rica are certainly not cheap but thankfully they’re not the most expensive in the region either … Uruguay, Chile, Argentina and Perú have higher prices for ‘Super,’ Uruguay and Chile have higher prices for ‘Plus’ but Costa RIca has the highest price for ‘Diésel’.

Taxes on Gasoline
In Costa Rica, taxes make up about 37.74% of the price for regular gasoline. In the UK taxes make up 75% of the price and only about 11% in the US….
