Costa Rica Construction – SuperBloque
One very ‘affordable’ method of building your own home in Costa Rica is with steel reinforced concrete blocks like the ones made by SuperBloque who have helped build 154,000 square meters of homes.
These steel reinforced building systems are easy quick and economical to put up. They use far less wood and also reduce the amount of cement required by about 50% in comparison with traditional construction methods.
- They are better insulated for bad weather and noise and all designs comply with the Costa Rica building codes and seismic codes.
- These are easy to build too which means that you can hire more basic (cheaper) laborers to help you rather than ‘skilled’ and therefore more expensive construction ‘experts’…
- Since they are ‘modular’ in nature, it would also be easy for you to ‘add-on’ should you wish.
SuperBloque also offers dozens of different plans that may be suitable for you.
One of the salesmen – Eduardo Aranda – showed me the 125.75 square meter (1,353.07 square feet*) ‘Croquis’ home plans and assured me that for construction materials and labor, it should cost no more than 15,000,000 colones to build.
At todays exchange rate of 466 colones:$1 that works out to only US$32,188.84 for a basic 1,353 square foot home.
Please bear in mind that this cost does not include the price of the land.
The website for SuperBloque is Spanish only but you can see the types of building products with examples of many different buildings that have been made with their block.
To see all of their photographs in this section, simply click on the name of the ‘Arq’ (‘arquitecto‘).
You can download the technical specifications of their block products (in Spanish only) and find a listing of their distributors here.
Their customer service is actually quite good however, it is 100% Spanish.
* One square metre = 10.76 square feet so a 200 square metre home = 2,152 square feet
