Tools that make doors open completely or remain firmly closed are systems of access control and can register people who enter or leave.

Different systems exist including magnetic-band and bio-metric cards. All have particular characteristics and can be adapted to a house or specific business.

Types. Proximity cards work with a special sensor that identifies the person when he shows his card.

Cards with magnetic bands work when the card is slid through a machine that recognizes the carrier whether he is authorized to enter or not.

Bio-metric cards are the newest and most different.

These cards recognize things such as the iris of the eye, facial features, and voice among others.

The system takes these features and assigns them a numerical code to allow different apparatuses to recognize them.

Think big. Large businesses need to control access. Although the use of traditional keys is an alternative, many of the new systems allow the company to organize ingress and egress.

Before getting a new system. Consider how many people will use the system then limit certain entry points to these users.

Advantages are that the new systems are very secure but the problem with cards is their transferability, which allows employees to lend theirs, or in the case of theft or loss, anyone can enter with another persons identity.

This cannot happen with bio-metric systems because they work with unique characteristics, such as finger prints.

The cost of these systems depends on the system, the number of cards and the number of doors to be installed. Prices begin at $2,000.

Small but safe. If you need to restrict access to certain rooms in your home or office you can find “digital closers” which unlike those used in large companies that can store 200 fingerprints, store only 10.

This system has been available for two months and is used for rooms that hold articles of great value.

Digital “closers” run on batteries that last three months. A light comes on when the battery needs to be replaced. A key is included in the package in case batteries fail.

It can be installed in iron, wood and glass doors, with metal frames. Prices range from $450 to $550.

A promising future

Big increase. Soon these systems will play a major part in all our lives.

Visitors? In the future you can decide who enters your home with an iris scan.
In school. Bio-metric systems will identify all the students.

Driving. Keys are a thing of the past. By 2015 cars will start with a scanner that recognizes owners.

On the bus. People who cheat the driver by saying theyll “pay when they get off” will have to stop doing this, as face-recognition systems will be used in evidence against them.
