Costa Rica Opera – Madam Butterfly is a roaring success.
Costa
Rica Opera – Madam
Butterfly Is A Roaring Success
The Compania Lirica Nacional (CLN) hired two casts for the starring roles for
Madam Butterfly by Giacomo
Puccini the distinguished Italian composer (1858-1924 ). At its debut,
Madam Butterfly was not a success but like many others, it appeared a short time
later to great acclaim.
Costa Rica Opera – Sharpless, Cio Cio San and Lt. Pinkerton
It has remained a popular opera ever since. There was an international cast with some well known opera names plus a Costa Rican cast.
Even though it is a truly tragic and heartbreaking story, the supertitles were
in Spanish with the opera sung in Italian, we felt that Madam Butterfly would
the ideal ‘first’ opera for my fifteen year old American son.
The theatre at Teatro Nacional was jam-packed, every seat was taken. Unfortunately the star Japanese soprano Mami
Koshigoe was unwell the night of our performance however, the Costa Rican soprano Anayanci Quiros gave a magnificent and very emotional performance as Cio Cio San the tragic heroine also known as Madam Butterfly.
Costa Rica Culture – Cio Cio San is courted by Lt. Pinkerton
American tenor Scott
Piper was masterful in his role as Lieutenant B.F. Pinkerton, a sailor
aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln who enters into an arranged marriage with Cio-Cio-San
(pr. Chocho-san), or Madam Butterfly, a fifteen year old Japanese geisha.
Costa Rican baritone Guido
Lebron sang the part of Sharpless brilliantly. Sharpless is the
North American consul who clearly sees what will happen, who warns Lt. Pinkerton
but, can only watch helplessly as the disastrous consequences of Pinkerton’s immaturity and callousness unfold before his eyes.
Costa Rica Culture – The wedding between Lt. Pinkerton and Cio Cio San.
For my fifteen year old son, it was quite a long show but he did enjoy it.
For the adults, when the best seats in the house are only 8,500 Costa Rican colones (US$17) for a world-class opera with some wonderful singers, great and enthusiastic direction from Mr. Chosei Komatsu, beautifully colourful and authentic costumes brought all the way from Japan (thank you Christine Komatsu and Ritsuko Takebayashi).
It was a fantastic night’s entertainment at a terrific price.
