Costa Rica Police – Definitely NOT overpaid…
In late December the Municipalidad of Escazu was advertising for 29 Municipal Police Officers.
The perfect applicant should be Costa Rican, have a gun carry permit, a valid driver’s license and preferably received training in criminology. Or at least a four year university degree in either social studies or economics although they would consider someone who had two years of similar work experience.
If you are one of the ‘lucky’ ones to be accepted, you are entitled to a comprehensive medical insurance plan, you would be a proud union member and your gross monthly salary including a special 18% ‘riesgo policial’ (police risk) would be 277,571 colones which at todays’ exchange rate of 497:US$1 is about US$558.49 per month or US$6,701.91 per YEAR.
The good news is that you can look forward to 4% pay raises every year. The bad news is that Costa Ricas rate of inflation is much higher than 4% so you would have less buying power each year although you do get to wear a nice blue uniform.
