Costa Rica’s Richest Municipalities 2008

In comparison with last year, the income for 2008 of the 81 municipalities will increase by about 23% which is about double the rate of inflation.

As usual San Jose will collect the most c35.372 million colones. The Mayor of San Jose, Johnny Araya Monge said that over the past few years they have worked hard to improve collections.

In September of each year, the 81 municipalities must estimate their income for the following year and present this to the Contraloria General de la Republica.

This estimate is based on what they believe will be collected through property taxes, trash collection and the sale of various licenses. If necessary, they can adjust their budgets with the approval of the Contraloria General de la Republica.

The municipalities are not allowed to spend more than 40% of this income on administrative expenses including salaries.
