Some of the biggest decisions when a family moves abroad have to do with education.

It can be a make or break kind of thing when choosing where to relocate. Whether considering permanent relocation or something that is just for a year or two, an internationally recognized and accredited school can give a lot of comfort to concerned parents.

The Country Day School Guanacaste (CDSG), originally a sister school of the Country Day School Escazu, has long been one of the premier American style schools located in Guanacaste.

After some rather tumultuous years, the parents are now taking control of the school and turning it into a non-profit education center run by a board of directors selected from parents of matriculated students.

The changes being made are sweeping in terms of corporate, financial, and organizational structure, but the new interim Board of Directors is charged first and foremost with maintaining the level of educational excellence that the CDSG’s staff has created.

The legal process of turning CDSG from a for-profit sister school of Country Day School Escazu into a non-profit, parent directed, and independent educational entity focused on serving its local community will take some time, which is why the interim Board of Directors has been elected to provide near-term critical oversight of operations.

They have been charged not only to maintain operations, but also to define the long-term structure and functioning of the school. After a 120 day period, the interim Board of Directors is expected to have defined the new structure and transition to the full time board.

To aid this process, the board has created several committees including operations, fundraising, enrollment, and marketing. All parents are welcome to join these committees to provide their support of the transition.

A large part of the school’s marketing efforts are geared towards the boarding school and a semester abroad program. CDSG has a beautiful campus, which includes all modern facilities, a dormitory that can house up to 60 students, an expansive organic garden, and an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

The new board is confident that once the local and international communities are aware of how much the school has to offer, it will reach record enrollment.

Parents and staff of CDSG have high hopes for the transition. They vow to maintain the high level of academic excellence that the school is known for and to open its doors to the local community.

The school has lowered its tuition and has a limited number of scholarships still available for the upcoming school year. The new interim board has a lot to maintain but is now at least in control of its own destiny.
