So Spirit… when are the Castro brothers going to run free open elections? And why is it his people have to leave (escape) on tire tubes and rafts made of trash?
Castro’s socialism is a dangerous one… because when the party is over for him and his brother there’s a giant void that develops since he’s not allowed anyone to become part of the ruling system… and that’s when the people REALLY suffer!
Over 30 years ago, I thought like you do now. Then I began visiting Cuba every year and after so many personal experiences and conversations there with Cubans, my eyes were opened. We were lied to by our government about Cuba. Big surprise, huh?
Cuba has had free elections for decades. Cuba is ranked third in the world for number of female representatives elected to serve. The National assembly makes nominations for offices including for the presidency. The Communist party stays clear of that process and spends more time on dealing with national health and education issues which, by the way, has put Cuba pretty high on the list of most educated and healthy countries in this hemisphere.
There seems to be a passionate participation in politics by Cubans. Each sector of the economy is represented and organization is detailed right down to the neighborhoods. Unless you see it for yourself, you are susceptible to the propaganda that has been put out by Cuba’s enemy. The U.S. government doesn’t want or permit U.S. citizens to visit the country. If they did, more Americans would see that they have been lied to.
Regarding Cuban refugees, a much higher per capita refugee count leaves Mexico than leaves Cuba and they leave for the same reason people do everywhere…money. In Cuba’s case, there is additional economic pressure due to a cruel and immoral embargo that has been in place for almost a half century. Cut off Costa Rica from trade with many of its partners and you might see a similar exit of the people.

Sprite: George Washington and Fidel Castro in one breath!!! I’m amazed. Maybe you should ask your Cuban friends what “paredón” means.
They were both landed aristocracy in their repsective countries and both led armed revolts against repressive governments. In fact, the Batista regime was far worse than the British and just as colonial with Uncle Sam behind it.
Both revolutionary armies were used to sieze land from previous colinials.
Sprite. Cuba has had fake elections for years. If you do not vote for Fidel, consider yourself dead. People have no freedom of speech or freedom of any kind for that matter. People could not tell you otherwise, because they are contantly watched and listened to. Nobody dares to speak against the revolution.
Please do not compare Costa Rica with Cuba. Ticos are most proud of their beautiful country and the democracy they live in.
Let me think —— $712,000,000 to win the US election last year. I worry about what that kind of money can buy. I wonder if any election is honest.
Dear Sprite and any other collectivists who are living in a dream world: sprite wrote: “I don’t know of any evidence that large population alone would nullify the successful administration of socialistic principles.” It’s not the size that matters, so much as the underlying principles. The collectivist/communist/socialist model has a very visible track record of failure and destruction. These styles of government have, in the last hundred years or so, killed approximately 50-60 million of their own people, not including those of their neighbors killed in wars of aggression. If you are right that a “stake through the heart of the religion of free market economies” has occurred, then we are all doomed. However, the recent events in the US are not the result of free market economics, quite the opposite, they are the direct result of the manipulation of the market by the government and those interests who have successfully manipulated the political system. We have not had a free market in the financial arena since at least 1913.
