I have to pick an A/C unit for my plant specimen storage room. I’ve never lived with A/C before, so am a bit clueless. I see alot of variation in products and prices in the CR market. Its a small room, under the stairs almost, so we are looking at 1200 BTU size mini split system. For example, Clima Ideal sell one from Carrier for $1200 or our local hardware store sells the brand Air Pro, which, for a similar sized model sells for $650. Does anyone have any advice for what characteristics are key in selecting a model? We have all the necessary tubes in place for a mini split system. Is the latest technology worth double the price if there are long term electric savings? Are there brands or models that are total crap?

axelgil, we met with a representative at the ‘Clima Ideal’ office just outside Liberia last week, also looking for info on units available. I would suggest you also check out the Frigidaire dealer in Liberia and the other company (can’t remember the name right now) there, and hopefully get a better deal…

Make sure you check the cost of electricity

Not all mini-splits are created equal. I just had to do a bunch of research with my electrician about mini-splits. We just installed a Mitsubishi in the downstairs area of our home. It’s not the cheapest, but it is very energy efficient and super quiet. It also has a 5 year warranty. I can tell you that the A/C warranties are important here. It’s inevitable that you’ll have an issue with a mini-split in the first year or two. Air Pro and G-Air both have only 1 year warranties and are not as energy efficient. Mitsubishi, LG, Westinghouse & Carrier are all good brands with good warranties. You have to know that often times the A/C units are cheap for a reason. Best to spend more now to save later. I would not personally recommend the Frigidaire (which I’ve seen at Pricesmart on the cheap). Good luck.

As is frequently the case, the cost of operation of an appliance will often exceed the cost of acquisition, so the advice to consider energy efficiency is good indeed. That is especially true given the increased cost of electricity per kilowatt hour the more a customer uses.
