Personally, I refuse to buy anything made in China. I’ll take any other country anywhere in the world, but China? Fagettaboutit! The fact that an “x” was used in the toothpaste label to make the “sh” sound probably means the Colgate toothpaste was made in China. And why does Costa Rica import garlic from China? I ain’t ever buying ANY garlic in Costa Rica after learning they import the stuff. Bleecckkk!

It’s really hard not to buy something from China anymore. Everything I pick up says “made in China”. They say that by the beginning of 2008, that China will overtake the U.S. and become #1 in manufacturing and imports through out the world. This country is going to hell in a hand basket, and the basket was made in China!

    bradbard,
When I was in the air force in the early 60’s we got nuke air to air missiles. The NCOIC was an ex-sheet metal man, he knew nothing of nukes. One day an alarm went off in one of our munitions bunkers. What we discovered was the NCOIC had about 15 nuke warheads stored in a bunker that was only supposed to hold 6 weapons. The warheads were extremely hot from nuclear interaction, had they been left in there much longer the HE (high explosives) would have gone off scattering nuke material several hundred feet not to mentioned how many of the missile men it would have killed or poisoned. What happened to the NCOIC, nothing, we were told not to say anything to anyone or we would be court marshaled. More on the sharp military intelligence.

It’s cut down on my shopping, that’s for sure!!! I’d rather do without than support this mess we’ve gotten the world into by letting China become a manufacturing stronghold.

Imainge my surprise when I read in one of the health newsletters I get that a lot of vitamins and supplements are made in China. Because these items are not mandated by law to state the country of origin, we have no way of knowing which of what vitamins we are taking come from that country — but the article stated that 90% of vitamin C and E are made there. Sheesh. It also said that some pharmaceuticals are also made in China (luckily I don’t take any of those) but I do gobble all kinds of other things, so I guess I have to contact the manufacturers and see if they will disclose the country of origin on those items. Does the US made anything anymore besides Samsonite luggage, pianos, and weapons????

Chinese-made tires are the latest item on the recall list, although in this case the company who sold the tires, which have defected tread that tends to fly off at high speeds, is small and they cannot afford to recall the half-million tires they sold. Some of the brand names are Telluride, Westlake, and Compass. Wonder if these tires are sold in Costa Rica?

We forgot to mention the toys made in China that are being recalled. The trains that are made with lead paint and other toys. I read that over 80% of childrens toys are made in China. So be careful when your shopping for the kids and grandkids. Is anything safe anymore?

If it was made in China, it’s probably NOT safe. They don’t care about quality; it’s all about making things as cheaply as possible.

Now it’s a FISH RECALL — is there no end to this mess? The farm-raised fish in China are fed antibiotics and antifungals that have been banned in the US because of the potential for cancer after longterm use. The FDA is now asking for proof that farm-raised seafood was NOT fed these drugs before it is let loose in our markets. Oh yeah, I’ll bet China is really going to comply with our wishes! The fish that is suspect — eel, catfish (why anyone eats this I’ll never know) basa (have no idea what kind of fish that is), and shrimp. I’m starting to get the creeps thinking about any tilapia I ate in Costa Rica, which is also farm-raised, and who knows what it got fed?

I just heard on the news in California that the toothpaste problem just got a lot bigger. Seems like there might be several 100,000 tubes that have antifreeze in them all over the country. Of course the news media excusses the problem saying the Chinese don’t know what our safety standards are. I thought whatever company ordered the product would have a set formula they must follow. Now I suppose they’ll say the Chinese can’t read our formulas. Sounds pretty far out to me.

I just heard that so far, they have identified over 180 plants in china, that are using chemical compounds in their products, (that shouldn’t be there). Also, in Bejjing the pig farmers inject their pigs with water, to make them weigh more at market. The problem is the water is contaminated. I sure hope they are not shipping any ham, pork or bacon to the U.S. or CR. You don’t want to eat any farm raised fish or shrimp in the U.S. either, because the food came from Canada, who bought the ingredients from China. If it didn’t come out of the ocean don’t eat it.

How will you KNOW where the fish came from? It’s not like they are required to list the country of origin on the labels, although they SHOULD do that and at least give us a fighting chance to avoid such ghastly products. My husband and I decided that only wild salmon and halibut are probably still safe to eat; I had lumped cod into that category and then saw an article that said the Chinese were processing cod, so who the hell knows what chemicals they put on that fish. I swear, vegetarianism is starting too look more appealing than ever!!! As for pork products, I rarely eat them, but when I do need my bacon fix (twice a year), I get organic, free-range, antibiotic-free and hormone-free bacon at the healthfood store. I think it is dusgusting that we import food from China. No wonder the farmers here are going bankrupt and out of business. My husband was talking to a scientist friend of ours who said that any fruits and vegetables grown in Chile, Ecuador and Peru are unsafe to eat because they use pesticides that were banned decades ago in the States. And that’s where most of our winter supply of fruits and veggies come from here in Colorado. YUK!

Luckily I live in Florida, so we can easily get fresh seafood out of the Gulf or the Atlantic. I always ask where it came from, and if they can’t assure me of it’s origin, I don’t buy it. I usually stick to local shrimp, but, I’ve had a hankerin’ for some scallops. The bay scallops are just coming in to season, so I may give some of those a try.

The 2002 Farm bill passed by Congress mandated country-of-origin labeling for seafood, beef, lamb, pork, fish, fruits, vegetables and peanuts, but the Bush administration has delayed its implementation for everything except seafood until October 2008.

    Why doesn’t this surprise me!

What am I going to eat for 6 weeks in Costa Rica since most of the fish they have there are farm-raised? I guess I could look for the odd ocean-caught snapper, or maybe some sea bass, but I’m not touching any of that tilapia or trout after this scare. Customs is going to think I’m insane when they look in my luggage — I’m brining NO clothes but have two suitcases packed with food items, spices, and household do-dads. If nothing else, I can live on the 5 pounds of organic brown rice I’m bringing and vegetables! That trout sure was good though, but who knows what kind of conditions it was raised in. It was the closest thing to salmon, which is my fave.

I know there are places in Costa Rica that raise Tilapia, I am not sure about trout but I’m sure there would be some local trout farms. I saw one place (in CR) on the internet that would net Tilapia from their ponds for you and clean them. There is one restaurant that has Tilapia raised in their own pond and will catch your dinner and fix it while you wait. I would imagine that where ever you are there are local grocery stores that have local Tilapia for sale if you ask. I know when we get moved that will be one of the things we will be buying locally. I buy frozen fish (Tilapia) by the box (10 Lbs.) if it isn’t from China. I was told by another ex-pat in San Ramon you can find locally raised fish, chicken, beef and pork if you look around. She said that there is one fellow that comes around with fresh chicken all cleaned and quartered, another fellow brings around fresh veggies, just more things that are great about Costa Rica.
