[quote=”Cancertomnpdx”]Sidebar question. If I live in Costa Rica, have no kids to come and visit, and have my dog with me, how do I get my stateside credit union to send me new VISA credit and/or debit cards when they expire? Would having a mail forwarding company in Miami do the trick? Going one step further, if I have a mailing address in Miami I wonder if Florida would see me as a resident of that state? If so, would Florida want a piece of the action from my 401(k) earned and rest for the rest of its existence in Oregon?

    Thanks,
    Tom

Florida has no state income tax so under any circumstance there would not be any tax due there. There will, of course, be federal income tax due.

Fidelity Investments will wire for free for premium members. And you can open an account w/ them if you live in Costa Rica.

Have you opened an account with Fidelity Investments while living in Costa Rica recently? I ask because I tried to open an account at HSBC Bank (in the U.S.) a few months ago. Everything went off perfectly until I got to the requirement for a physical street address. Then it came to a crashing halt.

I spoke to a customer service supervisor who, while congenial, said that there is simply no way for a non-resident (U.S. citizen or otherwise) to open a bank account in the U.S. And there it ended.

Fidelity Investments is not a bank. When I was setting up a wire to Costa Rica, I asked the Fidelity rep if a Costa Rican resident/citizen could open an account in the US and he assured me that it is possible. As I recall, he said the account would have to be opened by mail but once it was established, everything could be done via phone/fax/electronically.
