As the dollar goes, so go the gasoline prices

Motor fuel prices are going up because of the increased value of the dollar. Expats better fill up because the regulatory agency setting the price only used a rate of exchange of 526,89 colons to the dollar. That was the rate Feb. 13. The rate today is 564.17 colons, according to the Banco Central de Costa Rica.

Super gasoline will go up 26 colons to 711 colons a liter. Plus gasoline will go up 24 colons to 687 colons a liter. Diesel is going up 19 colons to 650 colons a liter. With a U.S. gallon holding 3.785 liters, the dollar price of a gallon will be $5.11, based on the rate of exchange used by the Autoridad Reguladora de Servicios Públicos. There also is an increase in liquid petroleum gas of 45 colons a liter to 396 colons.

These increases have been expected when the U.S. dollar began to show strength in February.

Since the gasoline that Costa Rica imports is valued in dollars did you expect anything different?

When you think about it the rise in fuel prices affects the Ticos much more than it does expats.

While we exchange our dollars at the higher rates we are getting our fuel at basically the same cost. The Ticos, however, are paying the higher prices with the same income as before.
