What obstacles are there to opening a bank account in CR? I have experienced notarized passport, birth cert etc. and even bringing some biulls with your home address on them…is that sufficient for a CR bank account opening? Or is there more….?:P
At the very least, you’ll need your current passport, something like a utility bill or a rental agreement that shows where in Costa Rica you live, something that proves the source of your income such as a Social Security award letter.
It’s getting more and more difficult to open an account here, so be prepared for more bureaucratic hoops to jump through than you’ve ever experienced before.

would it be better to open an ccount, say, with HSBC? or another bank w/branch in CR?
HSBC, ScotiaBank, CitiBank and other soundalikes are different entities in Costa Rica and North America. They may be owned by the same parent company, but their operations are totally independent of each other. And, in fact, HSBC in Costa Rica has been sold to a Columbian banking company.
So the short answer is “No”, having an account at HSBC in the States won’t do you any good at all here.
