Ok, group, what is the best cerveza/beer in Costa Rica?
May 7, 2014 at 12:13 pm #201250boginoParticipantAre there even any other Costa Rican beers other than Imperial and Bavaria? Personally I like Bavaria Dark.

Depends on the night and how many empties I’ll be leaving on the table. 😉
You forgot Pilsen…. popular, but not to my liking!
I normally go with the Imperial with ice and a “lemon”…. hmmmm! Not your classic beer connoisseur choice but the choices are often limited in the small places I like to frequent so having a consistently available standby is comforting!
May 7, 2014 at 2:46 pm #201252AndrewKeymasterIMHO there is no competition….
Segua is the best beer for me in Costa Rica but unfortunately it’s not that easy to find.
The fish restaurant in Avenida Escazu ‘Producto C’ serves it on draft.
You can see a review of the Segua microbrewery beer here.
You can read more about the fascinating legend of La Segua here.
Hope that helps …

No doubt there are some great microbrewery and craft beers available around CR…. we had a great one up by Lake Arenal. The problem is they don’t see a wide distribution and aren’t usually available in local Tico establishments. But with that said they are a real treat when you do happen to come across them in your travels!

The Arenal area Volcano Brewery has migrated to a bigger population base in Witch’s Rock. Like most microbreweries, they pump out flavor. It’s not beer flavored water like so many Light Beers.
For being always available, I must confess that Imperial will suffice for an emergency thirst.

That’s an interesting name for a beer Scott. I read the article on the Segua, and I recall as kid of 8 to 10 years old being chided by other older kids that “La Cegua te va agarrar” and also “El Coco” which hid underneath one’s bed, just waiting to grab you. As a kid it would scare you. Now that I’m older I look back at the sheer fallacy of half a coconut grabbing you! 😀
May 8, 2014 at 2:57 am #201257lyncotaParticipantImperial Silver on ice, lime juice, salted rim= Costa Rican Michelada. Best enjoyed seated at Reggae Bar, Playa Negra, Cahuita!!!

Michelada Imperial Por Favor, watching the Sunset at Gaviotas in Playa Hermosa 😀
May 9, 2014 at 4:47 pm #201259donosborneMemberI’ll take an Imperial (regular, not lite) because it’s a better-than-average beer and available anywhere beer is sold in CR. Favorite place to have one: Villa Caletas watching a sunset.
May 9, 2014 at 9:58 pm #201260costaricabillParticipantIsn’t it great when everyone seems so happy and relaxed this afternoon – what day is it, anyway?
Oh, it’s Friday, so have a great weekend and enjoy your ice cold beer(s) of choice as well as your margaritas!May 9, 2014 at 10:23 pm #201261VictoriaLSTMemberImperial Lite. OK, I’m a wimp. Laffe is good for a change though.
May 10, 2014 at 12:07 pm #201262Toucan1MemberThe best beer in CR or anywhere is a “Free Beer” shared with friends.
May 10, 2014 at 10:56 pm #201263pdsnicklesParticipantIs Rock Ice still available? I like it with ice on a hot day. I know, that’s NOT the “right way” to drink beer, nor is Rock Ice a choice of beer connoisseurs.
Honestly I don’t find any of the beers of Costa Rica to be among my very favorites. In the U.S. I like Sam Adams, Bass Ale, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Tecate or Corona with lemon and Tajin (chili and lemon powder, from Mexico)… I’ll have to try the Imperial with lemon.
