Home › Forums › Costa Rica Living Forum › Bought land in Costa Rica, now what do I do?
I just got some property and now i need to know how i get the power and the water in my name, Not living there really sucks!
Is there and 800 number for the power company?
What do i use for an address to tell them where it is?
Thanks,
dave
Sounds like this could have been planned just a little more thoroughly dkimball141?
Are you a legal resident of Costa Rica?
Do you own the land in your name or in a corporate name?
Is there power and water connection already on the land?
Sorry to ask what maybe a stupid question but before you try and telephone the Costa Rican utilities – which would be an exercize in futility – do you speak fluent Spanish?

yeah scott you maybe right.
no corporation, no legal resident, yes to power and water on the land.
the neighbor is looking after it for us and no we did not get this in writing anyway i will but i got werioded out about haviving to pay all his taxes and bonuses so i sayed forget it, i know i should do that and will.
anyway no on spanish but i’m learning and have a good friend who does. Should i just go into the local office?
i was prepared , i even looked in your book to find the info but could not.
dkimball141,
Where is your property? Did you buy it through a real estate agent, if so could you get them to help you?
Is there a house on the property, are you planning to move down and straight into the house or could you rent for awhile while you get those utilities taken care of once you get there?
talkin to the agent as well just thought it would not be such an issue
i’m probubly a couple years away from living there but still would like work to be done on the house.
I’ll figure it out.
thanks for the help,
dave
One thing i don’t understand about Costa Rican law on undeveloped land is that after sometime squatters can gain rights on the property. Even the very person you hired to take care of your property can possibly claim rights on the land he is paid to watched for. Is that true?
You can see an article about squatters at
As usual, if you take the right precautions and have a proper legal contract with the guardian, there should be no serious problems.
