    Hi

My son was recently born here and I am currently applying for an Irish passport for him. His mother is Costa Rican so we will probably eventually get around to applying for a Costa Rican passport also. I hear the queues in the passport office here are horrendous so would rather put it off for now anyway. My question is if we bring him to Ireland on his Irish passport and then bring him back into C Rica will my son be in the same position as me, ie only have upto 3 month stay before he has to leave? Or will the fact that he was born here with a birth cretificate to show, will that suffice for his residency?

    Many Thanks

I welcome comments from any of our VIP Members but for something this incredibly important – your son – I’m not sure if it’s wise to just accept whatever you see hear in a Discussion Forum…

Would suggest that you get professional legal advice from someone who specializes Costa Rica immigration issues…

Since your son was born here, he has a CR citizenship (automatic, no need to apply).
You can use Irish passport to travel, no problem. Just don’t forget to put a stamp in the immigration, otherwise they won’t let him out of the country.
When you come back your son doesn’t need to leave the country every 3 months as he is a citizen. All you need is to go to the local registry and get his official certificate of birth. That certificate will have your son’s CR cedula number that you can use, for example, in a public hospital.

When you have time, you can get a CR passport for your son. Once he is 12 (I believe that’s the age) you can get a CR plastic cedula (with a photograph) for your son.
