We are going to move to Costa Rica at then end of next year and will be building a house. Not counting the cost of the property, what is the current cost per foot range for building a 4000ft, two story house, with a nice finish out including custom wood cabinets, tile, and granite countertops?

What area will you build your home?
Different pricing for different areas.
July 21, 2006 at 7:30 pm #177673OTTFOGMemberWe have found a lot in East San Jose above Sabinilla in the San Ramon de Tres Rios area.

July 21, 2006 at 8:58 pm #177675DavidCMurrayParticipantIf I were planning to build in an area other than one of the touristy, beachy gringo-trap areas, I’d be budgeting for about $65 per square foot. That should allow for architect’s fees, permits, site prep (if not too extensive), and good quality construction and finish components. If you plan on a $20,000 kitchen, then budget more.
You may get away for less, but if you cannot afford $65 per square foot you should reconsider your plans.

July 22, 2006 at 10:56 am #177677dkt2uMemberI think the $65 a sq foot figure is in the ball park. A good source for ideas and advice can be found at http://www.crbuilders.com/index.html

July 22, 2006 at 12:26 pm #177678*LotusMemberdkt2u, I believe you are in Esterillo? How are things looking down there with all the development happening. We won’t be down again until December, just curious if all the building in Jaco, Esterillo and Playa Hermosa is changing the landscape so to speak.
KeithJuly 23, 2006 at 10:18 am #177679dkt2uMemberYes, I am in Esterillos Oeste. I guess one would say the building going on in Jaco for sure is changing the landscape there. For the first time you have what would be considered highrises going in on the beach. It’s a little depressing driving through Jaco now and seeing as many as 3 or 4 cranes high above the town. We never really liked Jaco that much any way. We only go mostly for some shopping. The building going on in Esterillos isn’t changing the landscape too much here yet. The gated project by Costa Rica builders Ltd. is on the road coming into the village and not on the beach or even within view of the beach and the rest of the village. Nothing big is going in yet down in the village. I’m sure it’s just a matter of time though. For now though, Esterillos still has the small fishing village feel.
July 23, 2006 at 1:24 pm #177680*LotusMemberWe feel the same way about Jaco, it is convenient to have it there but we only visit for groceries, medical pizza etc..It is nice to be close to. We took a gamble on Columbus Heights as we love the area and could not find land for that price(we paid $6 M2 for 5000M2) anywhere else in Playa Hermosa. Of course I read the info on this site but went ahead anyway after some investigation etc..I did just receive a letter from there attorneys(Facio) that we will be closing on our lot in September. A long detailed letter explaining exactly where they were regarding infrastructure etc…It seems they have broken ground on the gated entry and may have started the roads etc by now. We wanted to be in a gated community because this will be a vacation home for us. I like Bob but just felt his projects didn’t offer enough land for our needs. Someday we do hope to live there, for now we will spend about 2-3 months there. Scott if you would like I can e mail you a copy of the letter from Facio, it is pretty detailed and explains the progress to date and what has been accomplished.

July 25, 2006 at 12:25 pm #177681AndrewKeymasterLotus – I have met with their attorneys on a related matter but knowing the backgrounds of exactly who started this company, I have no desire whatsoever to know what they are doing now or, at any time in the future. And sorry! I can not and will not expand on this explanation.
