My husband and I are frequent travelers to Costa Rica and have experience using the bus system. However, I am having trouble finding bus schedules from the States. Is there somehere online, or someone from this site, that can help? Specifically, we will be going from San Jose to Cahuita in September and will need an afternoon bus.

Those buses are less frequent than the bus to Limon which probably runs every 1 – 2 hours. From there you can get a bus from limon to Puerto Viejo that stops in Cahuita.

We are actually spending 10 days along the coast. We will be staying somewhere between Playa Chiquita and Punta Uva. We fly in at noon and want to get as far as Cahuita for the first night. We should be able to catch a 2pm or 4pm bus if they run somewhere around that time.
I found some bus schedules online at “costaricareisen.com/info/busse_eng.htm” but I cannot tell if that information is current.
We are so excited to return; have been coming 1-2 times/year since 2005 and have met some wonderful people. We hope to retire in Costa Rica within about 5 years. By the way, I love this website and receiving the newsletter in my email!

April 9, 2009 at 11:14 am #195756jamesgoshen4MemberI’m sure that Grayline is a comfortable ride with AC and direct service. However, this is expensive at $35.00 for one-way fare. You can travel with the public bus for between $5 – $10 (from San Jose).
April 10, 2009 at 1:14 am #195757FourreadsMemberYes Grayline is comfortable and more expensive. Another option for travelers, no?
April 11, 2009 at 12:58 am #195758jamesgoshen4MemberIf you catch the later buses to Limon just make sure that you can catch the bus from Limon to Cahuita in the later afternoon. You need to make sure that you can get a bus from Limon to Cahuita. The bus stop to Cahuita is a couple of blocks from the stop that you will arrive from SJ and it gets darker around 5 PM.
