We are coming to CR for 3 months and have rented a vehicle for that time-the price was $1500.00 which seemed good until we found out that didn’t include the $35.00 per day for insurance. That makes the car rental almost impossible, at least for the whole 3 months. We have a Platinum Visa which we will check for coverage and am checking AAA but I understand I am not in the USA but need to find a reasonable alternative. Any ideas?

Please post the name of the car rental place that would rent a car for $16 a day before insurance.
It is Thrifty.
The public liability insurance mandated by Costa Rican law cannot be satisfied either by your Platinum card’s coverage or your U.S. Insurance company’s coverage because they are not approved to afford coverage in Costa Rica. The rental companies are required to apply these coverages and costs to their clients.
Most car rental companies will cut a very good deal at this time of year considering that they make lots of money on the mandatory SLI insurance and the license fee at about $1-$2 per day plus whatever else you take. The rental fee seems to be negotiable but the SLI never is. Here is where you must shop. Thrifty (from memory) charges about $20/day for SLI where Dollar only charges $10. Big difference even for one or two weeks.
Credit card companies in US usually will cover CDW (colision damage waiver) but only for 30 days per transaction. So you must get your car renter to do multiple contracts of 30-31 days each. You must check with YOUR card company. Some like Amex Blue won’t cover you outside of North America. Amex Gold will cover max.30 days and then you need to wait one day before your next contract unless you pay them a fee for waiving this one day wait.
Any way you look at it, renting is very expensive but probably less than buying a car, insuring it, license fee…etc and then finding someone to watch it when you’re not in CR. This calculation must be done and is dependent on how much time you will spend in CR each year.
Wait for your next pleasant surprise at the gas pump!!!
We rented from Dean Krieg when we first visited Costa Rica in 2006 and he was the most reasonable at the time.
