Hello my name is Rosemary and I would like to know if you can bring a vehicle into Costa Rica or do you have to pay duty. We are going to buy a property near lake arenal and don’t know what web site is real now and what is not. We are coming down this winter and thought of staying near Liberia to start searching for the right property any input from all you wonderful vips on this site would be wonderful. Thanks
It is import to read as much as you can and visit for an extended time before purchasing any property. Also check out ARCR for the rules and regs for living here legally.
And yes, you will need to pay duty on both your car and household items you import into the country.

We drove the car from Texas to Costa Rica paid the import tax, muchamo plates and RTV you can do it all yourself except the plates for the first time you need a lawyer about $100. for the lawyer. I never found a site that was much help with anything, mostly people are blowing in the wind, but not much information from them. This site gets off the tract of what it is supposed to do. Give info,as oposed to radical remarks which it provides plently of. If you are looking towards Lake Areneal don’t start in Liberia it is a busy town and hot. The temperature at the lake is windy and cool, that is where we live in San Luis a small farming town away from tourist along with many americans and canadians who enjoy quiet and the countryif you want noise and nite life go for the beaches and big towns along with the hot and the malls

The answer to your two questions, Rosemary, is “yes”. You can bring a vehicle to Costa Rica from outside and you must pay the import duty and other assessments. Regardless of who imports the vehicle (you, a car dealer, or whomever) the one who ends up owning the car will pay all these costs. Nobody’s going to give the money away.
