Can anyone tell me the best way to get a cell phone for a short period of time – 4 months? and about how much it costs?
You can purchase a rechargeable SIM card from ICE in the airport terminal as you pass through Customs. With that, you can call any cellular or landline phone in Costa Rica. And you can add time (money) to it at a zillion locations all over the place.
You’ll need an unlocked GSM cellphone to put that SIM into. If you don’t have one, you can buy a relatively inexpensive cellphone here. The cellphone store, too, can sell you a prepaid SIM for it.

You can buy a $40.00 phone Samsung, with 700 minutes a Walmart Tu Yo. I recharge when I need minutes at grocery store, I bought mine in Esczue and live in Tilaran. It works great and we come every 3-4 months
