Moving to CR next month and nervous abt phone service…Does TMOBILE have sim cards? i have AT&T now and was going to switch….Read alot of good info on this site..where do you buy the skype phones? I will be more in CR than US thanx
You don’t really need a Skype phone, just a headset with a mike will work if you already have one. Now I use a $28 cam with mike that I bought from Amazon.com which works very well. My friend in Florida are amazed how much better each of us sound through Skype then on our previous land/cell phone connection. I am working with my Buddhist group here in Portland to sit with them when I am in Costa Rica every other Sunday evening with Skype. How is that for using technology for a holy purpose?
Trish, you may be have to ‘stick’ with Skype until you can get a SIM card here. You may be able to use your Cell phone, but you will have to present the original receipt for it, when applying for the card.
According to an article posted this morning on another site, ICE has approved 6 companies to provide some cell phone & internet competition. One of them appears to be a wireless internet company. Speed and technology can only improve in the coming years. I just purchased a Global Smart Phone and will see if the SIM chip works in CR this fall.
Recently, the Grecia ICE office has told folks that the original receipt they must provide for their cell phone must have come from a Costa Rican retailer, not an American one. Dunno if this applies generally . . .
Again, i am crazy about cells, i did get SKYPE but try to get headset for MAC or anything for MAC….dont like WINDOWS but its looking like i might have to change again!!!!!!!!!!thinking i should just move to CR and see how it all goes and then make decision when i come back to FL in sept or oct:) and get what i think i need
I, too, hate Windows and loathe the notion of having to “upgrade” to Vista or whatever replaces it. I recently bought an iMac here in Costa Rica and see no reason for anyone else not to do the same (cost aside). The only downside is that Apple’s web browser may not work with every website, so you’ll need to download FireFox or somesuch for those occasions.
Logitech and probably others make a headphone set with USB connectivity. I use one and it works fine with a mac.
