Thank goodness they weren’t planning on hijacking planes to Costa Rica!!! And were these recent morons even part of Al-Qaida? A couple were from Trinidad and another fron Guyana. Wonder what their motives really were.
June 3, 2007 at 1:24 am #184039AlfredMemberYou forgot to mention one was a former airport worker. I think I might be turning into a conspiracy theorist.lol
Can’t wait to see tomorrow’s news. Double LOLJune 3, 2007 at 12:06 pm #184040maravillaMemberThis gets crazier by the day — now what, they won’t let Muslims work near or in an airport?? What’s with these people? The news said last night the plot stemmed from their hatred of america. Oh cool. They don’t just want to kill a few thousand people, they want to completely destroy an entire area and disrupt the economy. Talk about nuts!
June 3, 2007 at 3:17 pm #184041terrycookMemberYes maravilla…and that is why the world loves us/U.S. so much!
Europe has always loved us So Much (not)….
Here is a new Routers Report .Sunday June 3,2007
Putin warns he will point missles at Europe
Russia will once again aim its missles at Europe if the U..S/us plans to build missle defense shield near Russia’s borders goes ahead as scheduled President Valadimir Putin was posted saying on Sunday.
Oh yes the Good ol U.S. out to make friends and save the world from themselves. Interesting news report from the C.R. newspaper in a Very anti CAFTA article. Why should C.R. worry about the good ol U.S. they are, after all, the best of the Goood Guys (not)
Terry From TexasJune 3, 2007 at 8:49 pm #184042PegMemberThey have been tracking these guys for 1 1/2 years, and they are still trying to recruit, and find a way to get explosives. My theory is, this may have been a convenient time to play the Fear Card again. The Prez is pushing his border bill, and the GOP base is fighting him on it. This may be a way of reeling them, and everyone else back in, before he leaves the country for a couple of weeks to attend the G8 summit. Just a theory. It wouldn’t be the first time this Admin. played that card.
June 3, 2007 at 10:01 pm #184043maravillaMemberBingo! I’m sure there’s more than a shred of truth to your theory. There are massive demonstrations in Germany in anticipation of shrub’s arrival. They ain’t too happy over there with how we conduct ourselves on the world stage.
June 3, 2007 at 11:37 pm #184044AlfredMemberMore fear, more funding? Maybe it is just timing, but it does sound suspicious.
In looking at all the possibilities for replacement in ’08, I don’t think the field shows much promise in the way of substantial improvement or change. The two party system has a virtual lock on the candidates. We need fresh ideas and new blood to see any sort of meaningful change in the way we govern. We will only get more of the same old, same old, next time around. The field must be opened up to independent thinkers and those not beholding to special interests. If not, we can only expect the government we deserve…One that is not responsive to the country’s needs.
Even as a mostly conservative kind of guy, I would be more than willing to hear anything from anyone, on the left or right, that would preserve businesses in the USA, get a real grasp on immigration, not sell off our infrastructure, and properly educate our youth so they can be competitive in the marketplace.
Also while we are at it, All corporate support of candidates must be reined in. We can’t have corporations giving money to both parties and expect any of the elected officials not to be influenced. What ever happened to a government of, by, and for the people? It looks more and more like a bottom line driven government than a representative one. And the end certainly does not justify the means.
As far as being disappointed in what has been happening, I am about as pi**ed off as most every other US citizen. And I voted for him!
We have to get out of the business of nation building and quasi-imperialistic dreams in order take care of business at home first. We also have to protect ourselves without turning into a police state. We have to reclaim the status of being a great nation, that others will want to become, and still be a nation for legal immigrants to be a part of.
There is a multitude of things wrong with this country and it didn’t just happen in the last six years. The course correction may, or may not come in the next couple of years, but we need to vote in candidates that share our values and ideals for a better country. If not, we all will be going to Costa Rica or other points on the globe to escape.PS I like the “Shrub” nickname. Almost fell off the chair! Took about three seconds to sink in. It was the first time I’ve heard it.
June 4, 2007 at 1:21 am #184045maravillaMember“Shrub” is one of the nicer nicknames I use for that idiot! I couldn’t watch the debate tonight. It all sounded so contrived. I like Kocinic (sp?) but he’ll never make it; I liked Edwards in the last go-round, but now I’m not sure. The rest of them? Uh, well, maybe Obama, but there is no way we are going to have a president named Obama. Sorry. I’m not even sure if it matters which party you vote for, and this sorry mess we’ve been in for the last umpteen years was my main motivation for moving to Costa Rica. Who knew I would decide to do that just as the real estate market tanked here and now I’m stuck with a house I can’t sell and which has gone down almost $70,000 in value. I blame that on the politicians, the lobbyists, and the corrupt mortgage business. Sigh. What a sorry mess our country is in. Ah, well, there is always Argentina if Costa Rica gets too Americanized.
June 4, 2007 at 1:42 am #184046AlfredMemberI won’t watch the debates until the field gets narrowed. No candidate really interests me right now. The only hope I see, and I say this with reservation, is Thompson. He might be the only one with some sense of moral conviction to do what we have to do, or he may just be another one of the usual suspects. I’ll just have to see what happens, if he finally decides to jump in. I still have a problem voting for any of the Demoncrats, but you never know.
As far as the real estate market is concerned, my assessment went up 40K this year, so I get to pay more taxes while I watch the value of my home drop as well. A grand thing, isn’t it?June 4, 2007 at 12:22 pm #184047maravillaMemberMy assessment went down, but not by much, although it did knock a $100 off my RE taxes. Meanwhile, we sit and wait for the turnaround. My beautiful house in CR beckons, but until we sell this one here, we will have to be snowbirds for a while, spending 6 months there and the other 6 here. Who knew when I planned my grand escape two+ years ago that there was already an agenda in motion?
June 4, 2007 at 11:46 pm #184048PegMemberIf it wasn’t for the Real Estate market, I would probably be in CR right now. As far as taxes and insurance go, the Florida State Legislature is working on that right now. They are considering several options to lower them, but knowing the way the political process goes, I really don’t think it will amount to a hill of beans.
Maravilla, have you buried St. Joseph next to your sale sign? We can only pray for a miracle.
June 5, 2007 at 12:31 am #184049maravillaMemberWe don’t even have our house on the market at the moment. But yes, last year we did bury that St. Joseph’s medal, and when we re-list it again either later this year or next year, I may bury a second one for double good luck!
June 9, 2007 at 10:15 am #184050AlfredMemberNow, even though the tainted toothpaste has been found in Nicaragua and other places, Costa Rica decides to cut loose Taiwan in favor of trading with China. Maybe I just don’t get it, but isn’t anyone concerned about these things. Or do we just all have a price that we are willing to sell ourselves for.
Costa Rica is not the only country to do this and I’m sure they have their reasons. I hope Stagno addressed these concerns when he was there sealing the deal. Or maybe he was silent like the rest of the world.June 9, 2007 at 12:39 pm #184051maravillaMemberIt’s a frightening thought that nobody addresses the issues of contaminated Chinese anything, but I guess if you have enough money, people will look the other way at all kinds of egregious activity — even if it is killing people. Sheesh. What is the world coming to these days?
June 9, 2007 at 5:23 pm #184052DavidCMurrayParticipantWelcome to the new world of smaller government, Maravilla.
Lower taxes.
Get the government off the backs of the people.
Let market forces decide.
And if you don’t like poison in your toothpaste, don’t buy it.
