I feel compelled to comment on the incredibly beautiful (and dangerous) drive between Ciudad Quesada and Naranjo. I drove it last week on the way back from Arenal and it was the first time I took this route. Although the curves in the road, steep precipices, thick morning fog and careening tractor trailers made for a white knuckled, heart pounding experience, it was worth it to see some of the most spectacular and gorgeous mountain scenery I have yet seen in Costa Rica.
I love this route from the Airport to Arenal…. we take our time, stop for lunch, and enjoy the view! Much less traffic than CR #1… and as you said…. the views and the mountains are spectacular! Worth the time and effort!
This route although very beautiful is dangerous. There is a section of the road, which is marked with a cross, where a cattle truck flipped over and fell 100s of feet and the river down below was flowing with the blood from the dead cattle. Go slow and what out for on coming car & trucks.
