I hope that I can get a bunch of responses to this query. I’ll soon be moving down to San Isidro de El General, in the middle of a large agricultural area. There are a lot of fruits and vegetables that I’ve never seen before. Is there a book that can give me an idea of how to prepare these foods? I don’t even know how to eat mangoes and the different types of bananas are equally strange. I tried preparing tomatillas and the end product was unappetizing. I also tried to make lemonade from a citrus fruit that was green with orange pulp and it was undrinkably sour. I want to experience the pura vida life as completely as possible, and I don’t want to throw good food away because I don’t know how to prepare it.

Thanks for any advice on books to buy. More thanks if you can provide me with a few recipes.

If you do a search online of Costa Rican recipes you will get several hits. Try this website as it does have a section on fruits and vegetables although not extensive explanations or recipes but you may find more details at other sites.

The following websites are those of Costa Rican cooking shows, they are in Spanish, but have recipes listed. They also provide a list of recipe books.

I have a cookbook “Sabor!” by Caroline Avila and Marilyn Root. It includes many line drawings so you can indentify the item. I purchased this at Los Lagos near Arenal several trips ago.

The back cover lists the publisher as Publicaciones de Las Americas SA, with an address in Grecia.

Good luck! I have not tried most of the recipes because you can’t get these things in Colorado.

I found some additional sites that have recipes, once again in Spanish, but the first site listed in particular had a large list of recipes for fruits and vegetables.

http://www.arecetas.com/index.html –> click on Recetario por tipo de Alimentos in the left frame and then click on either Verduras or Frutas

Many thanks to everyone for the leads. I’ll follow up on all of them. I expect to have a lot of fun exploring the different fruits and vegetables that are completely strange to me.
