Maravilla,
My jaw dropped when you said 1,300 US for an architect… I’m paying 7,500 US plus another 7,500 to manage my 300sq meter project in Grecia… I interviewed 3 local architects he was the most expensive but not by much… Did I pick the wrong 3 quotes… We’re still in the “ante proyecto” phase… Maybe I need to get more bids…
I’m also paying 470,000 colones for a ground study. Again it made sense at the time, now I’m feeling for my wallet…
Any thoughts on this…
I’ve built homes in Austin and the Florida Keys, this is my first in CR… sounds like your hitting on all cylinders….

They use a “standard” cost per square meter which is the basis of architects’ fees.
A client can opt to have an architect produce a conceptual plan (basically just a simple drawing) or complete and approved buildable plans which a builder would use to construct the house. The architect’s fee goes up as s/he does more work. For an additional fee, the architect will obtain a structural engineer’s review and approval, get the College’s approval, obtain building permits, etc. And for still an additional fee, the architect will oversee the actual construction which usually means weekly on-site inspections.
The fees are based on the College of Architects’ “standard” building cost and the extent of the architect’s services. For the complete job, including on-site inspections during construction, the College of Architects permits a total fee of 10.25% of the cost of the project based upon their standard building cost figure.
The architect’s fee is based upon what you’re building and the extent of his or her services.

All on-site inspections, permits, elevations for electrical, plumbing, etc. were included in that $1300 price for the architect. My contractor oversaw the project on a daily basis. It’s now a year + later and I’ve moved into my house and am still furnishing it, and doing the high-end finish work such as the mosaic bathroom and other details. Now we’re landscaping and that’s not as inexpensive as it was two years ago, but it’s a pittance by US standards, but 300 sq meters of sod for $500 seems like a bargain to me!

My daughter and her Tico mother-in-law met with Luis in January and we really liked him then we weren’t able to get hold of him after March. Did he move, is there a different number? We’re back in the area next week and really want to reach him or his brothers. Can you help?
