does anyone have any good tips to eliminate these little buggers
Move to Alaska?
I have three brothers and three sisters living in Alaska.
They bring down mosquitos with surface to air missles and complain about the “no-see-um’s”.:lol::lol:

Now, now – don’t be so hard on yourself. ‘Stupid’ is lacking intelligence, ‘ignorant’ is not knowing about something.
I am ignorant about many things, but occasionally do something stupid. Not knowing about Alaskan 6-legged vampires is ignorance, not stupidity. (sorry, 40+ years as a professor shows through sometimes).
I prefer to assume members here may be sometimes ignorant but never stupid.

Lack of experience doesn’t equal stupid. 😆

The only place that I know of that may not have the pesky creatures is the Antarctic but I wouldn’t bet on it.

I agree with Waggoner’s suggestions about mosquito repellent plants. I’m landscaping my new house and am putting Citronella grass all over the place. The great thing about Citronella is that it’s super easy to propagate and it’s hardy in many climates – so it can grow just as easily where I live in dry Guanacaste as in the wetter ‘highlands’. Oh, and it’s nice looking, that is if you like the look of wild grasses.

I started with one Citronella plant a few months back, and have since planted several root cuttings, and now I have about 10 new plants going. They root very easily and live happily in-ground or in pots.

Once rainy season gets going and the new plants explode, I plan to harvest them to make home-made Citronella oil to burn in lanterns on my terraces. Hope my Citronella mosquito-repellent strategy pays off!

Just a quick FYI – chiggers are not baby (larval) ticks. They are their own nasty species. The best thing we have found for their bites, and the bites of a lot of other nasties, is “Chiggerex”. We haven’t found it in CR but friends can bring it back from the US for you.

For informational purposes only:

Where I originally hail from (Minneapolis, Minnesota)the acceptable bite rate is 3 per minute. This after all the “seeding” of ponds with large scale attacks of killer chemicals which attack the larval stage. I sympathize with our Alaskan friends, but from personal experience in Minnesota, I’ll wager mine is as big as yours….

Then the bugs I call Chiggers here are not Chiggers. Those I thought were Chiggers I have seen come out of the eggs, with the big Mama Tick (dead) next to them (including at my house).

Do you have a scientific name for Chiggers ? Or a webpage to get more info ?

Maybe every one of us should have a couple of those in the yard :

Another natural form of control for ticks is the guineafowl, a bird species which consumes mass quantities of ticks.[26] Just two birds can clear 2 acres (8,100 m2) in a single year.

However, it would not work in our yard, the dogs would eat the chicken .. 👿
