There is a small health clinic in the little town near my property. (I must drop in sometime to check it out.) I am told that there are even a couple of doctors who live in this small town (Palmitos). I am wondering what is considered the best health care clinic in the San Ramon-Palmares area. How many are there? Can someone tell me how many doctors service this area and perhaps which one(s) are preferred.
Under the topic of odd sights; On my last visit, I noticed a small ambulance making the rounds in my countryside neighborhood, Uniformed nurses were seeking donations from the locals. We are talking about coins clinking into a cup from poor farm workers who live there. Of course, I stuffed some larger bills into the cup but I Cannot imagine how such a venture could be profitable for the health workers making those rounds. It also seems strange to see such a thing in a semi-socialized health care system.

There are also many smaller clinics there that specialize in cancer, orthopedics, etc. I haven’t yet secured the services of a doctor that I could go to if I were sick there, but I plan to do that on my next trip. One of my neighbors has a great Tico doctor who speaks english and makes housecalls for $20. Can’t beat that.

I wonder if, like I hear about the police, they even show up? Addresses such as we have in the States, don;t exist in CR. It never ceases to amaze me how anybody finds any place in Costa Rica simply with a written address. My own address there includes a brief description of a sharp curve in the road and a certain quantity of meters from a certain little pueblo. This amuses me to no end.

For exactly the reason you cite, it might be well to create some sort of unmistakeable landmark that an ambulance crew can identify. I can tell you from experience that finding an unnumbered house in the dark, in the rain, while answering an emergency call, is an incredibly frustrating experience for an emergency crew, too. At least give ’em a fighting chance.

The land and trees at the entrance from the paved road do not belong to me so I wonder what would happened if I nailed some kind of sign to the tree. probably nothing would be said about it but this is just another little idiosyncratic aspect to life in Central America, I guess.
By the way, it is good to hear the red cross has service in Grecia but I would imagine that to be the case with so many americans and canadians there.
October 11, 2007 at 2:06 pm #187237DavidCMurrayParticipantWe’re 500 meters off the paved road, so I got some white spray paint and painted two large arrows on the pavement that point down our road. Now I have a point of reference for anyone who’s looking for us.
I’m confident that the existence of Cruz Roja in Grecia or elsewhere has nothing to do with the nortamericano populaion. Cruz Roja has been here much longer than we have, and we can hardly be their primary means of support. I’ll bet they’re serving San Ramon, too.
