Scott,I am planning a move to Escazu Oct.-Dec this year. Can anyone recommend moving companies from the Nevada,USA ? I also have an 1997 GMC Yukon and thinking of shipping it as well.. Thanks Ed

There’s a lot of bureaucracy which has been discussed extensively here but it’s not rocket science.
As to the Yukon . . . There are lots of pros and cons. Importing any vehicle can be a nightmare, and once here, you’ll be astonished at how expensive a Yukon will be to insure, fuel and pay tax on. And then there’s the matter of parts and service . . .
July 25, 2006 at 10:03 pm #177738cindycMemberI am using Barry Wilson, barry@shipcostarica.com, when we move in August.
He has been very responsive and competitively priced. I’ve seen lots of good reviews of his services.Cindy
July 26, 2006 at 12:05 pm #177739kclowerMemberMy wife and I are also using Barry for our move in October. I agree with what Cindy said. He was quick to respond to the inquiry, answered any questions and we’ve had positive feedback from others he has helped move.
July 28, 2006 at 2:21 pm #177740rocky425MemberCan you tell me what kind of prices he charges, We need to move a Hummer H2 and electronics, no big furniture but a few pieces we want to keep?
ThanksJuly 29, 2006 at 10:12 pm #177741DavidCMurrayParticipantUnless they’re moving an entire container from the same point of origin as yours, no one except the mover can give you any meaningful information on costs. There are too many variables.
If the only “household goods” you’re shipping consist of electronics, then a crated shipment should suffice. That will probably take longer in transit and cost more per cubic foot than sending an entire containerload.
As for the Hummer, it can be shipped by itself (or maybe loaded with the electronics??). Do consider, however, the implications of owning and operating it here where gasoline, insurance and the marchamo will be very expensive. It’s not an easy task getting a car imported here, either, due to the bureaucracy, import duties, inspections and certifications, etc. That, of course, applies to any vehicle, but the operating costs of the Hummer will be very substantial.
July 29, 2006 at 10:29 pm #177742maravillaMemberAnd won’t there be about 80% of its value imposte as an import tax? Driving a Hummer in CR will make you stand out like a big fat sore thumb and may even make you a target for a robbery, given that the cost of that Hummer may be more than an average Tico earns in a LIFETIME!!!!
September 1, 2006 at 2:05 pm #177743rocky425MemberI’ve thought of the fact it might make a good target for robbery, on the other hand, it’s big and red and isn’t going to be easy to hide, and it does have satellite location technogy, anti threft devise etc. Oh, and I have a gun and am not afraid to use it. LOL
September 4, 2006 at 12:03 pm #177744DavidCMurrayParticipantAnd, speaking of satellite location technology, it probably won’t work here. That’s the bad news.
The good news is that there is radio-location technology readily available. We just learned of this when friends bought a new car. They had it (Lojac)installed for $387US.
The better news is that, with the Lojac installed, you get a 30% discount from INS on the theft portion of your supplemental auto insurance. For us, that’ll pretty much offset the cost of the Lojac and likely prevent our having to pay the 20% deductible if our vehicle is stolen.
The best news is that the annual renewal for the Lojac in second and subsequent years is about $200.
September 5, 2006 at 12:52 pm #177745rocky425MemberWe’ve had LoJac on another vehicle. I had forgotton all aboutthem. Good idea. Did they have it install in CR?
RockySeptember 5, 2006 at 9:10 pm #177746DavidCMurrayParticipantYes, it was installed and is supported in Costa Rica. Their office and installation site is in Pavas about a kilometer from the U.S. embassy and easy to find.
