Hey folks, aside from the obvious political tensions in Honduras right now and the fact one is an island and the other is not…can any of you highlight for me the major differences between the two? Anyone with experience in investment there?
There are not any “direct hits” by hurricanes in Costa Rica.
The Scuba diving in Roatan in much better! But the beauty of Costa Rica is unequaled!
Costa Rica has access to both Pacific and Caribbean (Honduras, not Roatan access to Pacific is limited to the Gulf of Fonseca), numerous rivers, lakes and waterfalls. The surfing is much better in Costa Rica.
We considered purchasing property in Roatan after we visited about 5 years ago. Then we visited Costa Rica and were hooked and ended up buying a small home on the Caribbean coast. Some differences come to mind. The medical system in Costa Rica, though not without issues, is superior to the one in Honduras. Also, you would have to go off island to the mainland by ferry or plane to receive more than basic care. In regards to travelling back and forth to the US, airlines offer a more limited, expensive and lengthy choice of flights to Roatan than they do to CR.
There are many similarities, though, especially when comparing to the Caribbean side of CR. Interesting social/cultural mix of people, prevelance of English spoken….
Thanks for the replies so far. I look forward to more of your thoughts. How about from a weather perspective…is the rain so prevalent in the “low season”?
The surf is certainly much better in CR as from my knowledge it is pretty much non-existent. Obviously they target a different set of water sports…i.e. scuba diving.
