Scott, a suggestion that may be very helpful for many of the vast VIP reader community here. Like many others, I have regular business dealings in Guanacaste. Recently, because of the great airfares, I’ve been flying into San Jose rather than Liberia and driving over to the northwest Pacific coast via the Tempisque bridge. I understand that the recent rains have damaged the Pan-American highway at San Ramon and also a section of the road between Liberia and Santa Cruz. Perhaps you (via members and other sources) could update us regularly on the condition of these road rehabilitation projects (and others) so that we can arrange our driving obligations. Maybe you could do the updates on the homepage so we don’t loose sight of this forum thread/topic over the coming weeks and months until things are back to normal. Thanks for your consideration.
Hi Billw888. I can understand why you have been flying into the SJO airport, as fares are almost always better there to make the drive well worth the saved $$$. Currently, in our area, the only bridge that is out on the way to the Tamarindo/Flamingo/Conchal area is the bridge near Belen. (Between Santa Cruz and Belen). So you either have to take the road west in Santa Cruz towards 27 de Abril (not a great road, as there is about 10 miles of unpaved rutted road) or go to Liberia first then head southwest to the beaches. The shorter is going to be the bad road via 27 de abril, by about 30 minutes, but the extra drive may be worth it to you to have all paved road. The bridge that is out is estimated to be repaired in 3 months last I heard (which would put it repaired in January).
Thanks, Becky. I’m very familiar with the westward back-road alternative routes out of Santa Cruz to Tamarindo and points north to Potrero. I guess we’ll rely on word-of-mouth updates as to the return of the section from Santa Cruz to Belen as well as any problem points on the all important Pan-American Highway.
it would be great to have a lot of pertinent information updated on a regular basis, but this is a free website and it takes time and money to always be updating information on a homepage, and that is just not real practical to ask someone to provide that kind of service. Just my opinion.
