Every single time taxes were increased, workers’ wages went up and the middle class grew. Every time taxes were decreased by republicans for the wealthy, we get a recession or, as in the cases of Hoover, Coolidge, Reagan and the Bushes, a depression.
It is as simple as that. History from 1900 to present.Edited on Feb 09, 2009 16:40

Be educated enough to follow your instincts and intuition, not some elected mouthpiece paying lip service in order to keep his job and all the perks we taxpayers pay for. The 2nd stimulus package is just an effort to boost the consumer confidence of “John Smith” in hopes of boosting broader consumer confidence; the ultimate cost of which we will all bear. Here in Seattle, we had been less impacted by the recession compared to ther states with large manufacturing, technology and science based businesses, but the world needs less software, fewer planes and not as many semi-tractors. Amazon and Costco (the bargain companies) are holding their own, but Nordstrom is hurting badly. Again, I reiterate my long standing concern: at what point will the government regulate the freedom we enjoy of exiting the country when they finally realize that those with the means to leave might not come back and therefor there will be no one left to pay the bill?
I enjoy both haggis and fish, especially fresh Dorado caught courtesy of my favorite local fisherman in Mal Pais.February 10, 2009 at 9:50 am #194887spriteMemberI’ve never actually met anyone that liked haggis. I am well integrated with the Puerto Rican and Cuban communities and those cultures eat just about every part of an animal that can be chewed and some that cannot be (patas de puerco, comes to mind) I guess you have to develop a taste for such things. But I cannot imagine what extreme set of circumstance short of dying of hunger that would induce me to develop a taste for haggis.
February 10, 2009 at 11:22 am #194888AndrewKeymasterI LOVE well made haggis… It’s good peasant food for me – a good peasant.

February 10, 2009 at 11:41 am #194890crhomebuilderMemberI can verify that the Tico version of haggis and Scottish whiskey result in fast intestinal combustion.
I’m looking forward to having the opportunity to enjoy real Scottish haggis prepared by a proper Scottish peasant. All invitations welcomed!February 10, 2009 at 2:14 pm #194891costaricafincaParticipantThe Haggis I have tasted, was very similar to a good meat loaf! I can remember reading that a Scottish made haggis was refused entry into the USA as ‘unfit for human consumption’.
Whiskey, you can keep it!February 10, 2009 at 2:23 pm #194892AndrewKeymasterWhat!
Insulting haggis is one thing but I’m not sure that this Moderator will tolerate someone insulting good Scotch… 🙂
How many different Scotches have you tried?
If there any other single malt lovers out there, one of my favorite sites is [ http://www.maltmadness.com/ ] and he’s written about 2,000 different single malt whiskies – not to mention hundreds of blends, vatted malts, etc.
I LOVE Lagavulin ….

WeLoveCostaRica.comFebruary 10, 2009 at 4:28 pm #194893costaricafincaParticipantI grew up near a Hiram Walker distillery and the smell was enough to put me off whiskey forever. To me, it is ‘up there’ with the smell of camp ground bathrooms…!
February 10, 2009 at 6:54 pm #194894ImxploringParticipantNow we’ve gone full circle… from Costa Rica’s financial policy all the way to the delightful smell of camp ground toilets! You have to love this site! LOL
Sad to say the later might not be too far off topic… if things keep going as they are there will be TONS of people living in camp grounds, and I can’t help but guess the bathrooms won’t be smelling much better!
A couple of months ago AARP magazine had an article about folks living in their cars, and how local governments were dealing with it. Right down to having designated male and female parking lots for overnight stays with some security and bathrooms. It also covered how these homeless folks were keeping their gym memberships so that they had a place to shower and store some clothing. I know the local camp grounds and parks in NY have seen a large increase in the homeless living there fulltime.
About a year ago I had to deal with a fellow that had rented a storage locker at one of those rental stores and had moved in!!! He had quite the set up… he had wired the light in the locker to a power strip and had a TV, heater, and toaster oven in his little cubby… along with a ton of stuff… the true meaning of “down sizing!”
February 10, 2009 at 7:00 pm #194895AndrewKeymasterYou’re serious! He was LIVING in a storage locker in NY, I won’t ask what he was using for bathroom facilities….

WeLoveCostaRica.comFebruary 10, 2009 at 7:44 pm #194896ImxploringParticipantThe REAL deal Scott… got the call myself and saw it with my own eyes!! And I have to admit the guy was quite ingenious… had every little space used… and the locker was only 6’X8’… I think he was paying $85 a month (utilities apparently included!!) As for the bathroom… I’m sure he was using the grounds for simple tasks… and using the fast food place down the road for more complex issues that required more attention! LOL
February 10, 2009 at 9:31 pm #194897sueandchrisMemberAh, you silly forum members! Drink enough good whiskey and everything tastes like ambrosia. For shame casting aspersions on the drink of the gods. I tasted haggis once….perhaps it was a bad recipe or prepared by someone NOT the proper Scot (good pun). But the darlin’ whiskey……. And this is a kind of torture for all those of us not lucky enough to be there for the celebration of the Burns.
February 10, 2009 at 9:47 pm #194898orcas06MemberScott: Have you tried Scapa from the Orkneys
February 11, 2009 at 3:12 pm #194899sueandchrisMemberN-o-o-o…..say more – food or a whiskey brand? Whiskey? Can it be obtained in the States? Sue
