Just got back from alujela and had a necklace ripped off my companion as we walked around shopping. She had forgotten to take it off and paid the price. It was 14 k. gold with a small diamond in middle. Do not wear jewelry.

Good advice. I hope the guy who said I was living in fear and paranoia because I gave the same advice about not wearing jewelry reads about your experience. It’s certainly not worth the aggravation or the potential threat to your person to wear any snatchable jewelry. Glad you’re both okay.

How safe are diamond engagement rings there?

How much do you like your ring finger? If you want to keep both the ring and the finger, I suggest that you don’t wear the ring. When I lived in Beverly Hills there were lots of incidents where women wearing Rolexes were followed home and robbed. Along with the Rolex some women also were sporting the requisite rock on their finger. One woman refused to give it up in a robbery. No problem. They cut off her finger. This also happened more than once in Baja when I lived there. Use your head. You are living in a poor country where that ring represents the income for a year or more (maybe ten years if you have a big rock!) to the average Tico,Nicaraguan,Colombian, etc. Why would you want to advertise that you may have more jewelry, money, other stealable goodies at home if you are wearing a diamond on your finger. I would love to wear my emerald engagement ring, diamond wedding band, Tiffany earrings, etc. but I know better. My safety is paramount, not wearing a piece of jewelry that could get me mugged, killed, or mutilated. And no I’m not being an alarmist. This is a reality in many parts of the world today.

congratulations.. at least they did not harm you.. which seems like the trend here. crime here is rising and really needs to be addressed by the current goverment. i have been here full time 6 years and have seen a dramatic rise not only petty crime but also violence. i am not going to compare statistics comparing the U.S with here as I also am NOT trying to sell any real estate.. I could care less if you move here or not.. these are only observations..

the other day..during midday in the san pedro mall there was a shoot out regarding some racial comments.. the guys just took out a guns and killed the offender.. they both just got into a cab and left.. lets see if they will ever be caught… NOT.. these incidents are rising.. especially gun related incidents.. pura vida

by the way.. with all its crime and all.. its still one of the best places to live.. its just part of the price of living in paradise.

What kind of racial comments against which segment of society, do you know?

After reading the account of the Embassy employee who was a victim of a violent robbery in their own home, I realized that you can live in a secure compound with guards and alarm systems and STILL be a victim of crime. If I remember correctly, they figured it was someone the maid tipped off about items in the home worth stealing, et voila! It’s best to be understated and not give anyone a reason to see you as a mark.

we were in canas, with kids. my G/F and her kids are real touristy looking. they went to take A photo of the church and then to musmannis.I was lagging behind. to shorten the story,4 guys were A team.1 seemed to be the pickpocket and the other 2 were going to hit the vehicle. one was the lookout.I know A little about life on the down side. these guys found out that not all are marked for crime.
don’t look the part and always keep someone away from you and watchful.
we spent nights late walking to mc,d’s in aljuela, and several other towns.isidro, fortuna,SJ and had no problem.
when they observe you observing them it takes them short.
