Hi again,
My wife needs some serious dental work and we have always heard that Costa Rica has some great dentists. Can anyone recommend a good dentist for her? Please be specific with names and address, phone number, etc. We are going down around Jan/Feb 2011. Thanks again! Jeffrey

The key is going to be the area that you will visit. If in the San Jose, Escazu, Santa Ana area I have a good dentist in Santa Ana.

Not to be rude, but it would be a good idea give a little more thought to your questions and do a little more of your own research before asking for advice.
Many of us are more than willing to help but you are asking very general questions and providing almost no information, but asking for very specific recommendations.
Where are you staying? What sort of dental work does she need? Can you stay long enough to complete the entire procedure and follow up care or are you thinking of multiple visits? Are you looking for insurance reimbursement? Etc.
Dental clinics that cater to medical tourists generally offer a higher level of service than those who treat locals. For example, they speak fluent English, schedule treatments to accomodate your travel plans and help with US insurance claim forms. Obviously, they charge accordingly.

I too am seeking a recommended Dentist. preferably in the San Isidro , or better yet San Vito or Ciudad Nielly area. I have a mouthful of 30+ year old amalgams, need a few crowns, and some cosmetic work. I am a part timer in the San Vito area and have tried 3 dentists in San Vito with results going from bad to worse, yikes! Any recommendations most welcome, thanks!December 26, 2010 at 12:27 am #204315rkhamm55Participantmy wife had extensive work done – 8 root canals, 13 crowns,

Thanks somuch for the recommendation!
Am still hoping to find a dentist closer to my neighbourhood (San Vito area,or San Isidro where I have friends I can stay with) as undergoing extensive dental restoration in San Jose would add a large expense to the budget (travel & lodgings/food) not to mention being away from my lovely CR homeduring the small window I am able to be there for this winter.December 27, 2010 at 4:21 pm #204317ChariotdriverMemberI would make sure that if you are reading up on Dentist and are in the habit of taking suggestions from others on who to use, and you decide to use that Dentist, make sure that you have the appointment with THAT Dentist and not a up and coming Dentist in their office.
The procedure that I went to the CR Dentist for in the first place was to get all my mercury fillings removed. I had requested from my USA Dentist that he remove the fillings but he was not interested as he thought that the benefit did not warrant the risk of removing the mercury.
Since I knew that there was a risk associated with removing the old mercury fillings I did quite a bit of research on which Dentist specializes in this procedure, read articles from them, I even emailed the Dentist personally back and forth before deciding on who to use. I was told that high suction, a rubber dam that isolates the grindings from getting inside your mouth and from being swallowed would be used to prevent the old fillings from getting into my system.
Needless to say I was satisfied with the credentials of the Dentist that I had selected and when I arrived at the office to get my mercury fillings removed I found out that the Dentist that I thought was going to do the work was not going to perform the procedure at all as a new Dentist was going to be used to perform the work. I agreed to move forward as I was assured that the new Dentist was very qualified to perform the procedure.
It took 2 visits to handle the fillings as they do not want to deaden both sides of the mouth on the same visit. Evertything seemed to go normally on the first visit so I thought all was well.Near the end of my second visit to finalize the removal of the fillings, on the last filling, the rubber dam broke and allowed the grindings to get into my mouth. I understand that accidents happen, but when the rubber dam broke, the Dentist did not want to stop to replace it. He commented that he was so close to the end of the procedure that he wanted to proceed with the last bit of removal of the mercury filling with the ripped Rubber Dam. After that was done I spent the next few minutes rinsing and gargling bits and pieces of mercury fillings out of my mouth and throat area.
In the process of removing the old fillings some damage was done to my inner gum line causing the Dentist the need to cauterize the bleeding. I asked what was with the metal box he placed on my chest and found out it was the “grounding plate” for the electrical cauterizing device. The Dentist mentioned that there was a little bleeding and that everything would be alright. For the next few days I felt that there was some damage to the inner gumline and went back to show the Dentist to get his opinion on what had happened. He had a mouth spray brought to me and I was told to use it several times a day to help heal the damaged gumline. I tried the spray for several weeks but the spot did not seem to be healing up properly.
I decided to visit my regular USA Dentist and asked him to take a look as the damaged area was not healing properly. His best guess is that the clamp used to hold the “Rubber dam” over the tooth was placed too far down past the tooth and onto the gum line causing the damage, either that or a slip of the drill bit while removing the old filling.
The USA Dentist gave me a prescription strength mouthwash to help heal the injury. It did heal after a few weeks of daily washing with the medicine. So in closing I highly suggest that you get confirmation that the person with all the credentials is the one that is actually going to be performing the procedure and not going to be deferring the work to someone not as qualified as the Dentist that is being used to garner patients by showing a long list of credential on their website etc.
December 30, 2010 at 7:47 pm #204318toadcastleMemberThanks for the sage advice chariotdriver ~ I too suffered gum damage from the dentist I visited in San Vito, and he didn’t even offer a dam for protection! simply started grinding away my old fillings, I could taste the metallic substance in my mouth and felt quite ill afterwards yikes!
Am still seeking any recommendations out there for competent dental work in the San Isidro/San Vito/ Ciudad Nielly area. Many Thanks in advance!February 15, 2011 at 8:05 pm #204319rbellMemberI have to second Rkhamm55’s experience with Prismadental. 13 crowns and 2 root canals later, I was able to spend a month in Atenas and still spend over $8000 less than the dental work would have cost in the States. The only negative I have is that appointment times are like stop lights and speed limits in Naples. I had to wait over an hour on two of my three visits, otherwise exceptional treatment and results.
