PURA VIDA 🙂
October 12, 2009 at 1:41 pm #198145hrichardsMemberthis whole thing is truly a joke. when I heard that obama won the nobel peace prize i had to research the prize itself because I obviously did not have a good understanding of this.
the picture that came to my mind was the immediate comparison to people like nelson mandela, martin luther king.. etc.. comparing these great people with obama.
obama is a very intelligent man. but who is this guy that he has won such an award.
regarding the people that are so anti foxnews.. just a comment. these opposing views are very important to help stimulate the mind so you can come to your own conclusions.. if it wasnt for fox news like orielly and such.. we would have only one sided viewpoints from the mainstream media..
I like oreilly.. I dont agree with his views many times but he has the cajones
Glenn Beck.. i have watched his program a few times.. I respect his courage to speak his mind.. with some of the things that he states.. Id be nervous..

October 12, 2009 at 1:51 pm #198146AndrewKeymasterIt was brought to my attention after publishing my article that nominations for potential winners of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize ended on the 1st February 2009 and since the president took office only 12 days earlier on January 20, he could only have won this prize for his work before becoming president and for the first 12 days of his presidency…

WeLoveCstaRica.comOctober 12, 2009 at 3:03 pm #198147beinuppityMemberAccording to Alfred Nobel’s will, the Peace Prize is to go to whomever “shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses”.
Nowhere does it say the laureate must be a president. His length of time in office, or the time at which he was nominated for this honor are immaterial. Barack Obama’s work toward these ideals had begun long before he even ran for president. Those works became apparent to the world when he became a world figure. It also does not state that the goals must have been accomplished. The recipient must have worked toward those ends. These goals are ideals for which we will all have to reach for all our lifetimes, and our children and our children’s children will, most likely, have to do the same. To say Barack Obama has “done nothing” seems naive to me. It disregards the fact that he has, indeed, lived up to the ideals laid out in the Nobel Peace Prize criteria. Regardless of one’s political views, I would expect all peace-loving people to applaud this. His humility upon receiving word of having received this award is, all the more, a testament to the fact that he knows there is still much to be done.
That being said, my original purpose for the “cut-and-paste” of President Obama’s statement was that, with all due respect, Scott’s “O’Bomba” message was a piece that I didn’t find appropriate as the lead story in a newsletter. It belonged here, in a forum (where it now resides). President Obama’s response, in my opinion, was news, as opposed to opinion. I decided to “cut-and-paste” the entire statement, because I felt that to take pieces out of context was inappropriate. It certainly was not my intent to offend, although I welcome the discussion it has seemed to provoke. (I also do not feel either of these belong in a newsletter about Costa Rican living.)
My thanks, Scott, for all that you do. I know you are sincere in your work, and I do not mean this to be a personal attack on you or anyone else.

October 12, 2009 at 3:56 pm #198148hrichardsMemberwhatever glasses you decide to wear regarding these viewpoints are all just that I guess.. opinions.. i like obama and think he is a very intelligent man and will be probably be a better preseident than many but in the end its all bullshit.
I do not think personally any sitting president should get that award.. if only for the fact that there is usually a lag time before truth comes out. so only after time when a president leaves office do descrepancies reveal themselves. if at all.
I just cannot beleive that with all the good that is being done around the world obama is the one that they can come up with. ??
I guess they have the right to choose whoever they want. its just now the Nobel Peace prize is another silly award.. almost like the MTV awards or the golden globe awards lol…LOL
I am happy and thank god that I had the good fortune to one day pick up a book that changed my life and now, live here in costa rica. corrupt.. yes.. but 100 folds better than the good ole us of a.
I think scott should come up with a new award for vip members that contribute most to the discussion boards.. i mean why the heck not..
call the the first annual “Pura Vida” award and you can design a statue and even have ceramonies
pura vida
October 12, 2009 at 3:59 pm #198149DavidCMurrayParticipant. . . and a big, fat cash award, just like the Nobels!
October 12, 2009 at 4:15 pm #198150AndrewKeymasterFunny enough, ‘hrichards’ I do have in-the-works as a token of my appreciation – an award if you like – for all the very special VIP Members who regularly help in the Discussion Forum.
Of course our very special VIP Member DavidCMurray will be disappointed – again – that this will not include a “a big, fat cash award” 🙂

October 14, 2009 at 4:08 pm #198155grb1063MemberBreaking News! I just heard Oblahblahblahma just won the Heisman Trophy for watching a college football game.
October 14, 2009 at 7:55 pm #198156aenaze1MemberThat is pretty funny…fact is though at least in recent memory the NPP has been a sort of “forward looking” honor and a mechanism for political posturing on the committee’s behalf. Bringing to mind recipients Arafat and Kissinger validate that. Its kinda like being nominated to run in the Kentucky Derby. Hundreds are nominated over a year in advance, but only 20 run and one wins. Of course count on Fox to boil it down to fit…does anybody know if Joe the Plumber got a nomination? I recall hearing where Beck said the teabaggers should have got it. What a riot!
