Diverticulitis develops from diverticulosis, which involves the formation of pouches (diverticula) on the outside of the colon. Diverticulitis results if one of these diverticula becomes inflamed or infected. The colon can become infected with craters of food stuck inside, which causes abdominal pain.”
Thankfully I have never suffered from this and have not heard of this being a common problem for people visiting Costa Rica but does anybody else have any useful tips on this?

Scott is correct about the pouches in the large colon. They are there because you have them and you must be careful what you eat. What triggers an attack are small seeds (tomato, cucumber, fruit) that can get into the pockets. The pockets are already succeptible to inflamation from normal diets. You probably need to research your condition online but unless you picked up a specific enteric bacteria in Costa Rica your bout with diverticulitis is something that can cause you fits no matter where you go. Having had gastroenteritis (Montezuma’s revenge) almost every time I’ve been to Mexico I can tell you that you know it when you get it. You run at both ends until you are prostate with exhaustion. Ultimately your body can adapt to the microbacteria in a given environment. Perhaps some yoghurt with active culture will restore the beneficial bacteria in your gut. In the meantime, be careful eating foods with seeds and nuts that do not fully breakdown in the stomach and small intestine.

I have been in CR 4 times lately, love it, never had any problems.
It can help you too, so you can enjoy CR!!!Good day.June 21, 2009 at 8:59 pm #196689AndrewKeymasterPlease feel free to recommend the product here in the forum ‘lavemder’… We are not concerned about this kind of recommendation, we are concerned about people planting information about dubious real estate projects and people we don’t know.
We’ll feature a couple of new articles on why I’m paranoid about that over the next few weeks.
